용두암을 닮은 개성 넘치는 Go.mir GUEST House_ 고미르 게스트하우스 

제주 바다와 한라산을 조망하는 전망대와 다기능 복합공간을 담은 볼륨감 있는 건축

제주 용담동에 자리한 고미르 게스트하우스는 클라이언트의 성과 용을 의미하는 이색적인 건물이다. 연면적 408m²에 3층 10m 높이의 작은 집이지만 제주의 관광객들이 즐겨 찾는 명소인 용두암의 형상을 닮아있기에 주변에 많은 관심을 자아내고 있다. 먼 옛날 화산 폭발로 인한 용암이 바닷가에 다다라 해식을 받아 형성된 용두암은 그 기괴한 모습처럼 용이 승천하려다 뜻을 이루지 못했다는 전설이 깃들어있다.

이러한 용두암과 불과 5분 거리에 위치해 있는 지역적 특수성에 기인하여 건축가 문훈은 용두암의 생성이야기와 현무암을 모티브로 삼아 게스트하우스와 카페, 주택이 조합된 절묘한 건물을 디자인하였다. 건물은 삼면이 일반 건물로 둘러싸여 있었기에 건축가는 수직으로 상승하는 계단탑을 상부에 놓음으로써 바다와 한라산을 한껏 조망할 수 있게 하였다. 건물의 높이 또한 용두암의 10m 높이와 크기가 같다.

흡사 기괴한 동물을 연상케하는 외관은 유로폼의 거친 흔적이 묘한 무늬와 패턴으로 고스란히 외벽에 남아 있고 그 표면위에 현무암 바위를 연상케 하는 흑색 페인트가 칠해져 있다. 외관을 형성하는 독창적인 매스는 건물의 크기를 더욱 볼륨감 있게 만들고 주변 환경에 비해 단연 두각을 나타내는 존재로 인식된다. 마치 동물의 눈처럼 건물 이곳저곳에 랜덤하게 뚫려져 있는 마름모 형태의 크고 작은 창은 옥상층의 조망탑과 어우러져 주변과의 적극적인 소통을 취할 수 있는 적극적인 장치로 인식된다. 다아내믹함을 연출하는 마름모꼴 창은 거실과 주방, 계단실, 게스트하우스, 도서실 등 내부 곳곳에 넘쳐나 풍성한 전망과 자연광을 부여한다. 그 속에는 환기 및 조명을 위한 에너지 효율을 높이고자 하는 다공성의 개념이 내포되어 있다.

내부공간은 1층이 카페와 2,3층 주택과 게스트하우스가 적절한 수직적 공간 배분을 나누고 있다. 카페와 주택의 출입구는 서측 도로면에서 별도로 진입할 수 있고, 게스트하우스는 그 반대편 동측 후면에 마련됨으로써 동선의 혼선을 잡아준다. 가운데 중정을 사이에 두고 카페영역과 그 위로 주택영역이 자리하고 맞은변 벽을 두고 게스트하우스의 영역이 서로 완벽하게 분리되어 있다. 중정은 하늘을 보는 장치이며 외부의 마름모꼴 창의 연속성을 그대로 이어주고 있다. 전체적인 공간 색채는 흑과 백, 레드로 구성되며 건축가 문훈이 즐겨 쓰는 레드의 강렬함이 곳곳에 묻어난다.

레드는 주택으로 이어지는 출입구와 계단실의 벽과 천정, 옥상층 전망탑의 바닥과 상부, 핸드레일 등을 전체 혹은 포인트로 붉게 물들이며 고미르 게스트하우스만의 특별함을 선사한다. 게스트하우스는 벽돌마감에 화이트톤의 페인트로 칠해져 정갈함을 더한다. 게스트하우스 1층은 전용욕실을 갖춘 객실로, 2,3층은 5인용 가족객실로 구성된다. 공동으로 사용하는 주방과 식당은 상부로 보이드되고 상부 천창을 통해 하늘을 바라볼 수 있다. 3층 도서실은 옥상층 테라스로 연결된다.

옥상층 바닥이 붉은 색으로 칠해져 있고 2중 높이로 공간이 구성되어 있다. 야외계단은 마치 소규모 무대나 공연장처럼 영화감상과 음악홀 등 고미르 게스트하우스를 찾는 방문객들을 위한 이벤트적 장소로 활용된다. 또한, 계단 위에는 바다와 한라산을 조망할 수 있는 전망대가 설치되어 있어 더욱 특별함으로 제공한다.

고미르 게스트하우스는 서울에서 수입 자동차 딜러로 열정적으로 살아온 건축주가 자신이 태어난 고향으로 돌아와 가족을 위한 집과 게스트하우스를 계획하면서 출발한다. 적은 예산과 여러 가지 기능이 복합된 건축을 개성감 넘치게 풀어간 고미르하우스는 무표정하게 지어지는 많은 게스트하우스 시장 흐름에 차별성 있는 건축의 질 좋은 잣대를 갸름할 수 있는 좋은 모범사례로 평가되고 있다. ANN

Go happens to be the Sirname of the client … mir in Korean means a dragon … so Gomir means Go's dragon. Jeju is an Island south of Korean peninsular, famous as a vacation spot. The landscape is dominated by halla mountain in the center and basalt rocks by the sea. The weather is more balmy than mainland which allows for more exotic vegetation growth. The site is located just five minute walk from a famous tourist site called Yongdoam(dragon's head), which is a basalt formation that looks like a dragon's head. The story and appearance generated by basalt Yongduam became a point of departure for the new design. The site itself has nothing spectacular, having a two way road in front, surrounded by common buildings. but, going up vertically meant that sights of the sea and Halla mountain could be secured.

Go is a sir name that is very common among Jeju Islanders. The client is a Jeju born Islander who worked as an imported car dealer in Seoul. He decided to return to his island of birth to start his own business, a guesthouse, and a coffee shop with a home for his family. The budget was very tight from the start, so many things were taken as given conditions. The three different functions merged to make one building, instead of two or three, even though site is large enough to accommodate at least two buildings with a decent courtyard in the middle. The exterior finish was decided early on, a eurofoam finish with paint reminiscent of basalt rocks.

The program requested by the client and the budget sculpted a simple and dense block of function with a small atrium in the middle carrying on the porosity concept for ventilation and light purpose for guest house design. Looking from the road, left is the guest house and the right is the coffee shop and the house. The south east was given to the house for better everyday living conditions. The 1st floors are angled because even though the footprint is small the volumetric experience is of spatial expansion. It is built to the maximum, so the angle and the extra volume is a bonus. The entrance to the guest house is at the rear, providing a walking experience and buffering from the busy traffic. The small lobby is greeted by an atrium of 3 floor depth. It provides a calm well of light gives some space of breath in otherwise a tight space compositions.

The rooms in the 1st floor is small but have private bathrooms. Rooms in the 2nd and 3rd floors have communal bathrooms with a one 5 person family rooms in each. The communal Kitchen and breakfast room has double height space, visually connected to the library on the third floor. The library leads to an open red painted terrace above the house. The Outdoor stairs can function as cinema and music hall. The Dragon head viewing platform is raised one floor up from the outdoor terrace to provide a good view of the sea and the mountain. The leading narrow stair can bring about an experience of ascending and anticipation. From the viewing platform, you can also checkout the planes coming in to land at jeju international airport which is only five minutes away.

문훈(Hoon Moon) 건축가는 어린 시절은 강원도 상동읍에서, 청소년기는 호주 타즈마니아에서 보냈다. 한국과 미국에서 교육을 받고, 실무를 익힌 후, 2001년부터 문훈발전소를 운영해오고 있다. 건축과 다른 장르와의 결합, 확장, 교배 등을 통한 경계 흐리기를 사고 및 작업방식으로 취하면서, 건축에 대한 가능성을 무한한 쪽으로 열어두고 있다. 주요작업으로는 락있수다, 롤리팝, 파노라마, 옹달샘, 582커브 그리고 2005년에 건축가협회상을 받은 상상사진관 등이 있고, 그림 및 설치작업을 가지고, 개인전 및 그룹전을 수차례 가졌다. 또한, 건축 작업과 연관된 동영상 작업을 통하여 건축 표현의 경계에 대한 확장을 꾀하고 있기도 하다.
