자연 속에서 풍경을 공유하는 특별한 별장공간, The Mirror Houses_ 더 미러 하우스

낡음과 오래됨의 조화와 균형적 배치와 이중적 매스, 캔틸레버식 테라tm 개념이 돋보여

더 미러 하우스는 이탈리아 북동부 트렌티노 알토 아디제(Tresntino-Alto Adige)주의 남티롤 지방에 있는 돌로미테 산맥의 경이로운 자연환경을 기반으로 들어선 고급별장이다. 알프스에 속하는 산악지대로 거대한 침봉들이 아름다운 볼차노 지역의 자연 풍경을 병풍 삼아 건축주는 자신이 살던 60년 된 농가주택 앞에 임대용 고급별장을 계획한다. 건축주는 방문객들이 풍요로운 자연을 감상하며 충분히 프라이버시를 보장받을 수 있는 작지만 의미 있는 건물을 요구했다. 이에 건축가 피터 피클러는 수려한 대지 조건을 기반으로 특별한 휴가를 보낼 수 있는 세련되고 현대적인 건물 디자인으로 화답한다.

건물은 기존 농가의 관계성을 고려하여 오래됨과 현대적임으로 대비되지만 서로 조화를 이루며 융화된다는 관점을 보여준다. 새로 지어진 집의 외관은 위에서 보았을 때 직방형 매스가 나란하지만, 어느 정도 비켜서 앞뒤로 배치되어 있다. 동일한 마감재와 표현기법을 통해 유사성을 띠지만 높이차와 비껴가는 배치 방식을 통해 건물의 입체감은 더욱 확연히 드러난다. 또한, 미러 하우스에서 눈여겨볼 점은 집이 지면 위에서 어느 정도 떠 있다는 점이다. 외부에서 보았을 때 지면과 분리함으로써 관리의 효율성을 높이는 동시에 내부 이용자들에게는 캔틸레버식 테라스를 통해 건물의 중량감이 덜어지는 인상을 주고 한층 더 나은 경관을 제공하고자 한 건축가의 의도인 셈이다.

집의 동측 면은 직방형의 검은색 알루미늄으로 뒤덮여 있으며 반듯한 형태를 추구한다. 건축주의 정원에서 바라보면 과거로부터 오랫동안 존재해 왔던 농가의 모습이 투영되고 입면 속으로는 멀리 아름다운 산세의 풍경이 시간의 변화에 따라 마치 그림처럼 다채롭게 담아진다. 이러한 입면의 닫힌 방식은 거주자와 손님 모두가 최대한 사생활을 보호받을 수 있도록 한 의도가 배어있다고 할 수 있다. 그 앞에는 마당과 수영장이 마련되어 방문객들의 휴식공간으로 활용된다. 이와 반대로 집의 서측 면은 도로와 인접해 있으며 외부로 한껏 개방된 입면 형태를 추구한다. 동측 면에서 반사되고 막힌 면의 흐름이 남측과 북측 면에서 곡선형으로 절개되고 맞은편 서측 면에 이르러서는 강한 시각적 트임을 유도한 것이다.

서측 면은 건축주의 정원과 인접해 있으며 투명한 유리로 마감되어 파노라마 같은 풍경을 감상할 수 있다. 일부가 막히고 열리는 측면의 절개방식을 통해 적절히 농가와의 시각적 개폐성이 조율될 수 있다. 유리면에는 UV코팅 처리가 되어 새들이 건물에 충돌하는 것을 막아주는 역할도 한다. 더 미러 하우스는 크게 두 개의 유닛으로 구성된다. 각각의 세대는 별도의 출입동선이 마련되어 있으며 방문객들을 위한 개별정원과 전용 주차공간이 마련되어 있어 자율성이 보장되며 마치 자연의 중심부에 있는 듯한 경험을 이끌어낸다. 내부 공간은 주방을 포함한 거실과 침실, 욕실로 구성된다. 특히 침실에는 자연 환기가 가능한 커다란 채광창이 달려있다. 지하공간은 임시 창고로 활용된다.

이처럼 더 미러 하우스는 마치 같은 대지에서 자라난 친형제처럼 재료와 형태의 동질성을 추구하되 서로 다른 높이와 배치방식을 통해 작은 차별성을 시도하고 있다. 그 배치에는 기존의 농가와의 적절한 관계성을 유지한 채 방문객들에게 자연 속에서 마음껏 힐링을 제공하고자 한 건축주와 건축가의 사려 깊음이 속속들이 녹아 있기에 더욱 의미 깊은 공간색채로 다가온다. ANN

The Mirror Houses are a pair of holiday homes, set in the marvellous surroundings of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, amidst a beautiful scenery of apple trees, just outside the city of Bolzano. They were designed by architect Peter Pichler. The Mirror houses offer a unique chance to spend a beautiful vacation surrounded by contemporary architecture of the highest standards and the most astonishing Landscape and beauty nature has to offer. The client, who lives in a restructured farmhouse of the 60s on the site, asked to design a structure for renting out as luxury holiday units. Guests have their small autonomous apartment and can fully enjoy the experience of living in the middle of nature.

A maximum degree of privacy for both the client and the residing guest should be taken into consideration. The new structure is oriented towards east with their private garden and an autonomous access and parking for the guests. Each unit contains a kitchen / living room as well as a bath- and bedroom with big skylights that open to allow natural light and ventilation. A small basement serves for temporary storage. The projects initial volume is split in 2 units that are slightly shifted in height and length in order to loosening the entire structure and articulating each unit. Both units are floating on a base above the ground evoking lightness besides offering better views from their cantilevering terraces to the impressive surrounding landscape.

The volume opens towards east with a big glass facade that fades with curvilinear lines into the black aluminium shell. Mirrored glass on the west facade borders the garden of the client with the units and catches the surrounding panorama while making the units almost invisible. The mirrored glass is laminated with an UV coating preventing birds collision. From certain views of the clients garden the old existing farmhouse is mirrored in the new contemporary architecture and is literally blending into it rather then competing against.

Peter Pichler

Peter Pichler was born in Bolzano, Italy in 1982. He was studying Architecture at the university of applied Arts Vienna and in the US at the university of California, returning back to Vienna where he graduated with distinction in the master class of Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher. Already during his studies Peter is joining Zaha Hadid in London, where he worked on several competitions covering all scales and on the award winning Nordkettenbahn in Innsbruck. He spent a while in Rotterdam working for Rem Koolhaas after turning back to Vienna and joining the team of Delugan Meissl, collaborating on an award winning concert hall in Amman, Jordan. After finishing his diploma Peter goes to Hamburg where he is working for Zaha Hadid as a project architect on a the new library and learning center in Vienna and on a 150.000m² mixed used development in Bratislava. He turns then back to Italy and establishes Peter Pichler Architecture in Bolzano. Peter Pichler is a registered Architect in Italy and member of the chamber of architects of the autonomous Province of Bolzano.
