바다의 풍경, 빛과 소리의 언어를 공간에 담아낸 Seashore Library, Nandaihe_ 중국 난다이허 해변도서관

함축적이면서 간결한 나무결 노출콘크리트 매스가 빚어낸 독특한 공간색

무성한 숲과 해안으로 잘 알려진 중국 난다이허 해안에 들어선 해변도서관은 바다를 배경으로 한 풍경, 빛과 바람소리를 담아내고자 한 공간이다. 건축가는 바다와 인접한 도서관이 환경에 대응하여 풍화된 자연의 일부처럼 보이게 만들고자 하였다. 도서관의 방문객들이 해변의 공간을 거닐면서 노출콘크리트로 마감된 도서관으로 들어서고 조금은 느리게 도시생활의 서먹함과 고독한 감정에 젖어들 수 있게 시도한 것이다. 각각의 영역은 서로 들고나고 필요에 따라 뚫리고 분할됨으로써 도서관 공간의 풍성함을 다이내믹하게 엮어준다.

이렇게 하여 구현된 2개 층의 공간은 크게 독서 공간, 명상 공간, 액티비티룸으로 구분되며 바와 휴식 공간, 아웃도어 플랫폼, 북 디스플레이, 리셉션, 오피스 등의 영역이 적절히 열리고 닫힘에 따라 바다와 공간 사이의 독특한 관계를 형성한다. 1층 리딩 라운지에서 시작하여 총 3개의 레벨로 계단식으로 처리된 독서 공간은 해변도서관의 가장 커다란 공간적 에너지를 품고 있는 곳이다. 3개 층이 하나로 보이드된 독서 공간은 해변을 무대삼아 적절한 조망 뷰를 확보하고 있다.

해변을 향해 길게 직방형으로 구획된 프레임 공간은 투명한 유리로 마감되어 해안의 풍경과 수평선을 그대로 끌어들인다. 계절과 시간에 따라 끊임없이 변화하는 바다와 해변의 흐름은 도서관 이용객들에게 사뭇 흥미진진한 자연의 드라마를 선사하고 있는 것이다. 리딩 라운지의 지붕은 안쪽 영역을 향해 반아치형으로 굽어져 있으며 천장에는 직경 30cm의 원형 구멍들이 뚫려있다. 지붕 구조에 삽입된 여러 개의 구멍들은 날씨가 허락되면 열리게끔 되어있어 실내 환경에 쾌적한 환기를 도와주는 역할을 맡는다. 한해의 봄, 여름, 가을철에 매일 1시부터 4시까지 좁은 통로를 통해 빛이 흐르고 방문객들은 내부에서 시간의 변화를 즐길 수 있게 된다.

바다를 향한 리딩 공간 좌측으로는 빛과 그림자의 극명한 대비감을 느낄 수 있는 명상공간이 자리한다. 삼각형의 콘크리트 벽을 사이에 두고 서로 맞물려 구획된 명상 공간과 외부 플랫폼은 바다를 조망하며 생각에 잠길 수 있는 특별한 공간이다. 사뭇 어둡게 처리된 명상 공간은 부드러운 곡면이 천장을 조심스레 누름에 따라 공간의 힘은 더욱 긴장감을 얻게된다. 바다를 향한 벽면에는 길게 수평창이 구획되어 일출의 신비로운 광경을 만끽할 수 있다. 이와 반대로 명상 공간의 서측에는 수직으로 난 긴 창이 일몰의 풍경을 내부로 은은하게 끌어들인다.

벽과 벽의 틈새를 통해 만들어진 외부 플랫폼의 긴 수직적 프레임은 바다조망을 색다르게 인식하게 만드는 공간장치이다. 지붕의 꼭대기에는 낮은 테라스가 마련되어 바다의 소리를 감상할 수 있다. 명상 공간과 연결된 액티비티룸은 꽤나 독립적인 공간으로 외부플랫폼을 사이에 두고 독서 공간과 분리되어 있다. 건물 상층부에는 톱라이트가 불쑥 튀어나와 아침의 자연광을 내부로 끌어들인다. 이와 반대로 서측 면에는 절곡된 벽면에 창을 통해 낮 동안의 자연광을 흡수한다. 이를 통해 따뜻하면서도 차가운 빛은 동시에 공간을 중첩시킴으로써 생기를 불어넣기에 충분하다.

건물의 외관은 나무 무늬 형태를 차용한 노출콘크리트로 마감되어 있다. 건축가가 모래에 새겨진 발자국, 바람과 바퀴자국 등에서 영감을 받았다고 밝힌 바와 같이 나뭇결이 한껏 묻어나는 도서관은 콘크리트의 딱딱함을 부드럽게 만들며 다채롭게 구성된 공간언어는 고요한 해변의 시간 속에 적막하게 아로 새겨진 기억의 표상으로 인식되게 만든다. 해안의 수려한 풍경 속에 덩그러니 놓인 작지만 무게감을 전해주는 해변도서관은 바다를 향해 말없는 이야기를 써내려가고 있다. 흡사 도서관은 고독한 시인이 되어 바다와 빛과 소리를 소재로 자연을 향해 함축적이고 감수성 높은 언어를 우리에게 선사하고 있는 것이다. Ocean, an ever-changing character continues to alter from season to season, morning to night. It is like a drama play of nature. As if giving the stage to this character of ocean, we pile up seating platforms raised toward the back, so that everyone has an unblocking view to the stage. Toward the sea, the building is enclosed by a series of operable glass walls at ground level. When the weather is nice, the walls are open to the sea directly connecting inside and outside. On top of these pivot walls is a horizontal view window that goes across the library; it is the main framing of sea view. To avoid interruption from any structural component, all the roof loads are carried by the steel trusses running above the view window. On both sides of steel trusses, we infill hand-crafted glass block masonries into wall.

The wall softens the hardness of steel trusses. Furthermore, the translucency of such material is sensitive to light. It transforms both natural and artificial light to inside and outside throughout different time of the day, smoothly changing the ambience of the building. The half-arched roof opens toward the sea and implies the main subject of the space. Meanwhile, the curvature allows wide span running both north-south and east-west directions. Several 30cm diameter circular openings are inserted and array on the roofing structure. They can be open when the weather is allowed, and help to ventilate indoor air. During three seasons of the year – spring, summer and fall, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm every day, sunlight would stream through those narrow air passage ways and project light spots inside and meandering through space with time shift. The meditation space is sitting aside from reading area. In contrast to the reading area that is bright, evenly distributed light, open and public, meditation space is rather dimmed, sharp of light and shadows, enclosed and private.

There are two slim openings, 30cm wide, on east and west side of the room. One is horizontal and one in vertical; one captures the light of sunrise and the other grasps the sunset illumination. In this room, a drastic roof curved pushes the ceiling down low. Above this curve, it creates a low terrace to the roof top. At this area, people hear the sound of ocean, though the vision is out of reach. Activity room is a fairly isolated space. Due to potential event and sound, it is being separated from reading area with an outdoor platform in between. The light well on the roof facing east and the clear story at west collect lights throughout the day from different directions. Warm and cold light overlap and tint the space simultaneously.

If we slice through the building along the north-south long axis, we can see how each space elaborates itself with ocean distinctively. And the movement and memory of human body together choreograph series of experience. During the construction phase, we worked with a local construction team and our biggest challenge was wood form poured-in-place concrete. The use of wood form was inspired by the sand marks of foot prints, wind and wheels on site. It implies a mark of memory in time that can be read as a poem. Wood grains are the marks of realization process that we want to leave on the library. Also, it softens the hardness of concrete with warmth. Challenges came one after another. How do we keep those wood grains visible and even touchable? How do we create the concrete color we want? How do we avoid flaws such as leaking, cracking, and air bubbles? Those are crucial challenges we faced while working with construction team. We tested mock-ups of concrete wall three times to ensure the final quality. Each time, we made progress but also found new problems to be resolved. We continuously confront with much unknown and exploration throughout the entire procedure. Every construction is an indescribable given fate, with a premise of dedication and diligence from each party involved.

Gong Dong Gong Dong received Bachelor & Master of Architecture from Tsinghua University, followed by a diploma at University of Illinois where he received the Master of Architecture. He also had an exchange experience at Technical University of Munich. During his study in America, Gong Dong received several awards including Excellence Award from Steed man Fellowship International Architectural Design Competition, 2000; First Prize from American Institute of Architects Chicago Chapter’s Student Design Competition,2001 and Excellence Award from Malama Learning Centre International Architecture Design Competition, 2002. Prior to establishing his own practice he worked for Solo man Cord well Buenz & Associates in Chicago, then at Richard Meier & Partners and Steven Holl Architects in New York. In 2008, Gong Dong founded Vector Architects and has become one of the most active young architects in China. Gong Dong has been invited as guest speaker by Universities including Tsinghua University, TianJin University and Southeast University etc. He was also appointed the design tutor in Tsinghua University, School of Architecture. His firm and projects have won awards including China Architecture Media awards (shortlist for the Best Architecture & the Best Young Architect ); WA 'China Architecture Award' ; 'Chinese Excellent Exploration & Design Industry Awards 1st Award'; 'Good Design is Good Business China Award' and Architecture Record 'Design Vanguard'.
