지중해를 향한 스페인 Sardinera House_사르디네라 하우스의 지혜로운 조망 공간

사르디네라 하우스는 푸른 바다가 드넓게 펼쳐진 스페인의 알리칸테 해안가 한적한 언덕 위에 자리한다. 엘 포르티솔과 카사블랑카 사이의 지중해의 풍경이 그림같이 바라다 보이는 곳에 들어선 이 아름다운 주택은 스페인 발렌시아를 기반으로 하는 라몬 에스티브 건축 스튜디오가 설계한 것이다. 1,285㎡ 면적에 지상 2층, 지하 1층 규모의 주택은 파노라마식 경관을 격조 높게 즐길 수 있도록 계획되었다. 이를 위해 건축가는 석축을 쌓고 그 위에 여섯 개의 켜로 나누어진 콘크리트 벽을 수직으로 세움으로써 바다로의 경관을 압축하고 확장시키고 있다. 서로 다른 방향으로 나란히 세워진 마름모꼴의 매스를 통해 저마다의 다채로운 풍경이 전개된다. 여러 개의 밀집된 켜로 분할된 공간은 앞서거니 뒤서거니 겹쳐지니 하면서 불규칙하면서도 서로 꼭 들어맞는 배치를 엮어가고 있다. 이러한 배치 덕에 공간의 풍성함은 더해지며 각각의 영역에서 차분히 사색할 수 있는 여유로움이 부여된다.

바다를 향한 주택의 수평성은 벽면에서 길게 확장된 캔틸레버를 통해 더욱 시각적 긴장감을 증폭시킨다. 수직 벽에 의존하지 않고 안쪽 천장에서 불쑥 튀어나온 캔틸레버는 건물의 무게감과 중력에 대한 역설적인 장치인 셈이다. 다양한 레벨과 크기로 형성된 캔틸레버는 한낮의 뜨거운 열기를 걸러주고 동시에 공기의 순환을 부드럽게 끌어들여준다.

자연스럽게 캔틸레버 하부는 전망을 위한 휴식공간이 되며 주거면을 따라 제법 커다란 테라스가 형성된다. 테라스에는 랜덤하게 구획된 구성 방식의 잔디가 깔려있고 이와 연계된 수영장이 해안을 향해 길게 놓여있다. 외부에서 바라볼 때 계단식으로 배치된 층별 구성은 상부의 빗물을 모아 하부 저수조로 유입시켜 주는 기능도 맡게 된다.

테라스 하부에는 별도로 실내 수영장이 마련되어 있으며 실외 수영장과 다른 층에 존재하지만 옆으로 긴 창에 의해 서로 시각적으로 연결된다. 실외 수영장 하부는 실내 수영장의 상부를 밝히는 훌륭한 빛의 음영 요소가 되며 테라스 바닥인 동시에 실내 수영장 상부가 되는 유리 천장을 통해 자연스러운 조도를 이끈다. 실내 수영장과 실외 수영장의 적극적인 연계성은 실외 수영장에서 수영하는 모습을 내부에서도 감상할 수 있게 함으로써 공간 분위기는 더욱 드라마틱하게 고조된다.

해안 반대쪽은 건물로 진입하는 입구부이다. 파사드는 불투명하고 흰색의 아코야 목재를 활용한 자동 조절 시스템을 갖춘 셔터로 마감되어 있다. 연속된 수직 분할로 마감된 아코야 패널은 햇빛으로부터 노출된 건물의 외관을 보호하고 걸러주는 동시에 거리로부터 적절히 시선을 차단하는 기능을 맡는다. 흰색 목재와 더불어 건물을 구성하는 주요 마감재로 사용된 흰색 콘크리트의 질감은 투명한 유리와 더해져 건물이 마치 하나의 색으로 인지된다. 건물을 구성하는 돌출된 매스 탓에 안쪽 마당은 두 개의 영역으로 나누어지며 나지막한 여러 그루의 나무들이 정원의 차분한 분위기를 북돋아준다.

내부공간은 외부의 화이트한 색상을 그대로 이어가며 바다로의 조망을 최대치로 이끌고 있다. 지평선의 시각적 중요성을 최대한 이끌어내고자 각각의 2층 침실에서는 시시각각으로 변화하는 지중해의 풍경을 감상할 수 있게 된다. 침실에서는 밖으로 연결된 작은 규모의 유리 발코니와 돌출된 유리박스가 캔틸레버 상부에 마련되어 있어 외부 풍경과 적극적으로 관계를 맺을 수 있게 된다. 1,2층을 연결하는 계단은 투명하게 처리되어 지면에 닿는 자연 채광을 용이하게 만들며, 밤이 되면 층계들이 램프로서 은은하게 불을 밝힌다. 1층은 거실과 주방, 식당이 해안 쪽으로 마련되어 있다. 거실은 2개 층을 오픈시킨 6m 길이의 커다란 유리창을 통해 시원스럽게 외부를 조망할 수 있고 문을 열면 바로 옥외 테라스로 나갈 수 있다.

지중해의 청록색 물빛의 해안을 부드럽게 물들이고 그 풍경과 함께 사르디네라 하우스는 주변 환경과 동화되는 모습을 연출한다. 일관된 톤으로 통일성 있게 처리된 담백한 집의 색채만큼이나 정리된 공간 구성은 사뭇 겸손함마저 들게 만든다. 멀리서 바라보면 흡사 집은 언덕 위에 세워진 고요하게 들어선 성채를 연상시킨다. 집 앞으로는 경사진 절벽과 바다가 존재하고 주변으로는 푸른 숲으로 구성된 특별한 곳에 건축주와 건축가의 생각은 애초 어떤 모습을 그렸을까. 그것은 아마도 시간과 계절의 변화에 따라 주변의 에너지를 있는 그대로 받아들이고자 하는 집의 순수한 모습이 아니었을까. 그 질문에 건축가는 바다로의 조망을 위한 하나의 묵직한 개념을 머릿속에 묶어두고 거주자가 공간에서 깊이 사색하고 쉴 수 있는 지혜로운 건축언어로 답변하고 있다. Located in a setting of great beauty and valuable landscape, in front of the Mediterranean Sea, between El Portixol and Cala Blanca, the Sardinera House lays on the top of a hillside, lined by a headland entering the sea on a bay of turquoise waters. The original idea for the design was based on enjoying and enhancing the panoramic views of the setting, by creating a relaxing contemplative environment that allows enjoying the experience provided by the place.” A set of concrete walls exhibited facing different directions, compressing and expanding the views and generating several images.

The vertical surfaces are limited horizontally by long cantilevers that extend towards the sea, thus creating verandas that enclose the large terrace. Because of their constructive system, these cantilever don’t lean on the walls, but fit in between them, thus increasing the visual tension and generating paradoxical sensations of massiveness and weightlessness. “The views outwards are framed between the architectural surfaces and the pool surface, outlined on the horizon.” The longitudinal façades of the house are opposite. The entrance façade, hermetical and opaque, is protected by an automatic system of adjustable shutters made of whitened Accoya wood. It protects the façade from the sun exposition and, at the same time, limits the viewing from the street. On the contrary, the East façade is much more permeable and transparent.

The concrete vertical surfaces are sealed with large glass panes, protected by cantilevers and twisting curtains that bring an ethereal Mediterranean atmosphere. The house has a strong tectonic character because of its expressive materials. The texture of the white concrete poured into the white timber have achieved such a resemblance that they sometimes seem the same, as it becomes apparent in the lateral windows. The house reflects the construction process. All structural parts are made of exposedconcrete, while the enclosure is made of timber and glass. There is an access through a double-height volume with side walls aiming the view at the sea and offering the visitor a first contact with the horizon.

Some vegetation is introduced in the in-between spaces, bringing the garden into the house. Each room opens towards the horizon through its own veranda. The living room takes on a role and a unique dimension, a corner of glass of six meters in height frame the best views of the sea. Throughout the whole house are generated multiple spaces from which to contemplate it, so much as from each one of their inner rooms all the way to the exterior spaces. Each room has a small glass balcony, similar to a bay window, set back of the boundary of the cantilever, to enhance the visual importance of the horizontal surfaces. The staircase has been developed as a sculptural element. The sea is visible through its translucent glass steps. This transparency also allows the natural light to reach the basement. At night, the steps light up as a lamp. The indoor and outdoor pools are on different floors but linked by a longitudinal window. Through it, the water of the outdoor pool casts shadows over the indoor pool.
