과거와 현재, 물과 하늘, 숲의 공간에 대한 실험적인 해석이 돋보여

덴마크 오르후스의 해변에 원형의 다리 구조물이 들어서 눈길을 자아낸다. 무한의 다리(The Infinite Bridge)로 칭해진 구조물은 덴마크의 건축스튜디오 기외더 오으 포울스거흐건축이 디자인한 것으로 직경 60m에 이르는 원형 구조물이 해변과 바다에 걸쳐져 있는 것이 특징적이다. 구조물은 바다 속 2m 높이로 설치된 강철 기둥 위에 목재를 깔아 구성하였다.

원형의 데크는 조류의 변화에 따라 수면에서 1~2m가량 올라와있다. 무한의 다리는 해변으로부터 숲속 깊은 곳까지 연결되어 있는 강 계곡의 끝 지점을 연결하며 바다를 향해 곡선으로 이어진다. 사뭇 광활한 해변의 경관과 절묘하게 엮여진 무한의 다리는 우리가 잠시 잊고 있었던 바다와 해변의 관계성을 긴밀하게 만들어주고 특정한 지형의 현재와 과거 사이를 연결해주는 장치로 작용한다.

무한의 다리가 있던 장소는 과거에 사람들이 도시로부터 휴식을 취하기 위해 와서 그들의 배가 정박했던 항구의 선착장이었다. 해변의 위쪽 언덕에 자리한 바르나 파빌리온은 넓은 테라스와 레스토랑, 무대로 구성되어 사람들에게 꽤나 인기 있는 명소였다. 숲의 가장자리에서 바다를 바라보며 있는 이 파빌리온은 지금은 존재하지 않지만 항구의 선착장으로부터 체험할 수 있었을 것으로 여겨졌다.

이에 건축가 Johan Gjøde와 Niels Povlsgaard는 “다리를 걸으며 사람들은 주변으로 끝없이 변화하는 경관과 함께 그 장면을 공유하는 사람들과의 관계 형성도 경험할 수 있다”며 “무한의 다리는 이 역사적인 연결점을 재구축하고 도시와 주변 경관 사이의 관계에 대한 새로운 해석을 제공하고자 하였다”고 밝힌다. “우리는 예술과 건축 영역의 꽤 많은 부분에서 일해 왔다. 우리의 대부분 프로젝트는 그 자체에서 한 발짝 물러나 예술이 들어올 공간을 만들어 주고자 합니다.” “진정한 예술작품은 자연이다”고 밝히는 건축가 Johan Gjøde의 말처럼 무한의 다리는 접근이 불가능하게 여겨졌던 항구지역에 과거의 기억을 현재와 이어주고 물과 하늘의 관계성에 대해 실험적인 해석과 적극적인 체험을 보여주는 해변의 이색적인 구조물이자 진지한 예술작품으로 평가된다. The Infinite Bridge is a sculpture by danish architect studio Gjøde & Povlsgaard Arkitekter built and exhibited in connection with the international biennale, Sculpture by the Sea 2015, that takes place in the scenic coastal landscape surrounding the city of Aarhus. “We have created a sculpture that is all about experiencing the surroundings and becoming aware of the relation between the city and the magnificent landscape of the bay. Walking on the bridge you experience the changing landscape as an endless panoramic composition and at the same time you enter a space of social interaction with other people experiencing the same panorama,” says Johan Gjøde, partner and co-founder of Gjøde & Povlsgaard Arkitekter. The Infinite Bridge has a diameter of 60 meters and is positioned half on the beach and half in the sea.

It consists of 60 identical wooden elements placed on steel pillars housed about two meters into the sea floor. The deck of the bridge rises between one and two meters above the water surface depending on the tide. The curvature of the bridge follows the contours of the landscape as it sits at the mouth of a small river valley extending into the forest from the beach. The Infinite Bridge establishes a connection between the present and the history of the specific site, as it reconnects the beach to a long forgotten viewpoint at sea. “The bridge touches the landing dock of a previous pier located at the site where people used to arrive in steamboats from the city to relax and enjoy themselves. The historic Varna Pavilion that sits on the hillside above the beach was a popular destination in the scenic landscape with its terraces, restaurant and dancehall. Situated on the edge of the forest facing the sea the pavilion was meant to be experienced from the landing dock of the pier that no longer exists. The Infinite Bridge reestablishes this historic connection and offers a new perspective on the relation between the city and the surrounding landscape,” says Niels Povlsgaard, partner and co-founder of Gjøde & Povlsgaard Arkitekter.

As a young practice, Gjøde & Povlsgaard Arkitekter reaches out in their approach to making a difference with their projects. “The philosophy behind our architect practice is to start projects on our own. Rather than waiting for a project to come about, we invent the project and get in touch with people making the decisions. In this context Sculpture by the Sea was a unique opportunity to work within the coastal protection zone of Denmark and install The Infinite Bridge in an otherwise inaccessible area,” says Johan Gjøde. When commenting on the dividing line between art and architecture, Gjøde & Povlsgaard are very clear about their role. They are vastly experienced in designing exhibition spaces and working on projects that call for the spatial potential of a given location to be explored. “We have worked quite a bit in the realm of art and architecture. Most of the time it is about taking a step back and allowing the art to come into its own. In these situations, you have to create a setting where people can meet and contemplate the individual art pieces in a new light. As we did with The Infinite Bridge, we have tried to create a setting where you can experience the landscape surrounding the city. Actually, it is nature, the city’s skyline, the harbor and the relationship to the water that is the true art piece,” says Johan Gjøde.
