태국 코사무이섬의 Suan Kachamudee_ 수안 카사무디 부티크 리조트

가파른 경사지와 바위와 초목 등의 수많은 제약 조건을 이겨내고 지어져...

경사진 해안지대에 리조트를 계획한다는 것은 건축가의 특별한 아이디어를 필요로 한다. 평평한 대지에 자유롭게 건물을 계획하는 것에 비해 급경사지는 상당한 제약조건이 가로막기 때문이다. 태국 차웽노이의 코사무이섬 동부 해안가에 들어선 수안 카차무디(Suan Kachamudee)는 대지의 50% 이상이 가파른 경사지인 점을 십분 활용하여 계획한 특별한 부티크 리조트이다. 대지 조건이 경사지에 전 수많은 바위와 무성한 초목 등의 제약을 갖고 출발하였지만, 여러 가지 부정적인 요소들을 장점으로 탈바꿈시켰다.

디자인은 베트남 호치민시에 기반을 둔 프랑스 국제 디자인 스튜디오인 에스에스에이(SSA, Sicart & Smith Architects)에서 맡았다. SSA측은 불규칙하면서도 뾰족한 형태의 흰색 매스를 외관에 감쌌다. 둥글고 검은색 바위 사이에서 대조를 이루는 흰색 매스는 아름다운 해안 풍경 위에 살포시 놓여있는 듯하다. 언뜻 보기에 종이접기를 한 듯 접히고 구부러지고 반듯한 흰색 매스는 건물의 지붕이 되기도 하고 건물에서 연장된 캐노피와 발코니의 상부를 덮으며 그늘을 제공한다.

이렇듯 리조트의 주된 디자인으로 작용한 흰색 파사드 디자인은 단순히 보여주기 위한 것이 아닌 열대 기후의 강렬한 햇볕으로부터 투숙객들을 보호하고자 신중히 계획된 것이다. 흰색 건물은 저마다 다양한 단위로 나누어져 경사로를 분할하고 밀도를 최소화하는 역할을 맡는다. 그 과정에서 건축가는 가급적 건물의 위치를 조정하고 자연을 보존하고자 하였다. 실제로 리조트의 정원과 계단, 건물 내부 등 내외부 공간 곳곳에는 큼지막한 바위가 마치 예전부터 있어온 것처럼 존재한다. 크고 작은 바위와 초목들은 건축가의 재치와 접목되어 리조트의 차별화된 풍경을 엮어주고 있다.

2,500㎡의 대지 위에 1,000㎡ 규모로 들어선 리조트에는 총 8개의 침실을 포함한 5개의 건물과 스파 건물, 수영장이 있는 본관으로 구성된다. 투숙객들은 스파 건물에서 바다가 보이는 멋진 풍경을 감상할 수 있다. 각각의 건물을 잇는 좁고 계단화된 길은 리조트의 중심격인 본관동에서 시작하여 객실동을 연속적으로의 외부 동선을 이어준다. 중앙에 위치한 본관동에는 수영장이 딸려 있어 여행객들에게 코사무이섬 바다를 조망하는 특별한 시간을 선사한다. 숨이 막히도록 아름다운 경관을 가진 코사무이의 가파른 섬 언덕 위에 살포시 자리한 수안 카차무디 리조트의 공간 속에는 자연의 흐름을 수용하고 기후를 극복하고자 하는 건축가의 사려 깊은 아이디어를 엿보기에 충분하다. Suan Kachamudee project is an unique and cosy “boutique” resort located on the East Coast of Koh Samui Island in Chaweng Noi, Thailand. The project is located on a hill with a breath-taking view and with very strong constraints: a slope over 50%, large and numerous granite rocks, and lush vegetation. We developed the project around these constraints, taking advantage of each. The main idea was to create a contrast between the buildings and the rocks. The buildings are irregular sharp white blocks lay on the luxuriant landscape in contrast with the existing massive round black granite stones. These white blocks are split in various units, distributed a long the slope of the site, minimizing the density perception, and adjusting their location to the existing granite rocks, as well to preserve the existing vegetation. Besides, the design of the white shell is not a simple game of shape.

They are a shell that has been studied carefully in regards to the solar protection under tropical climate. The guests arrive to the Reception/ SPA building that provide an amazing view to the sea. The path leads the guest to the Main building with the swimming pool located in the core of the land. The bedroom units with their own private terraces are spread around the main building. Overall, the project is composed of 8 bedrooms split in 5 blocks, a SPA, a Main Building with a large swimming pool and a complete living area. The resort develops 1,000 sqm construction on a 2,500 sqm site. The Architects “Sicart & Smith Architects” a French International Design Studio based in Vietnam(Ho Chi Minh City) has developed the architecture of the project(not including the interior design) and the Project Manager “9PM” has taking care of the overall construction process with local contractor.
