Levering Trade_

For us, it is very important to design attending to the character of the building through its physical presence and to communicate clearly the use of the building working with its image. Looking at the work of German photographers Bernrd and Hilla Becher, we can appreciate the beauty of the industrial structures that in part is because its forms and the relations of its elements are the result of the pertinence in use. In other words, they are beautiful because of the sincerity of its forms and none of its elements were added for aesthetical or decorative purpose. We wanted to propose a building that was able to communicate its industrial condition through the architectural elements.

So we recalled a couple of forms that is possible to recognize as classics in industrial architecture: the saw tooth roof and the vierendeel beam. The work of Albert Kahn is a very relevant example of the particular beauty of industrial architecture through a tectonic expression. Our project sets up a tectonic system of saw tooth roofs and vierendeel beams whose repetition along the façade make possible the character of the building itself and establishes a formal relation with a set of silos located a few meters from the plot. Variations in that system allow manifesting in the façade, the different conditions and requirements of the inner space of the building, such as warehouse, private offices, meeting rooms and other spaces. It is very important to understand that this building was constructed with a very low budget and that is the reason for the materials used in it. In the corner of the building we can observe a major variation in the tectonic system; the direction of the roof has changed to manifest the new relation with the side street where the entrance is located. Otherwise the slope of the roof could be seen from the street.

A steel lattice work was proposed to reduce solar radiation and also to protect the windows from possible vandalism due the marginal conditions of the zone at night. The inner work space is described as a double height ward, limited by OSB panel walls that add a friendly atmosphere at low cost, and also maintaining the industrial character. It is possible to find craft workers on the streets of Guadalajara, weaving objects on request with different materials like plastic threads and many natural fibers. We wanted to add to the building a craftwork sample, so we decided to hire a team of weavers to work with the handrails, weaving its gaps with palm leaves. We verified the effectiveness of the saw tooth roof observing the quality of natural lighting in the warehouse space, just by using a conventional translucent plastic sheet as a lid on the Vierendeel beams.

ATELIER ARSº is an architectural practice based in Guadalajara México and led by Alejandro Guerrero and Andrea Soto. Our work should be understood as the implementation of a way of thinking about the architectural project in which the memory of architectural forms, the history of architecture and the compromise with the city are the basis of our practice. The acrobatic novelty of most of the current architectural panorama produced by media over exposure of the profession does not interest us. For us a good building is one that without giving up its own expression and individuality is in fact a clear record of a relevant tradition. We are interested in buildings in which we can observe the beauty of life through their interaction with nature, light, gravity, materials and forms. The fanaticism of formal, philosophical, environmental or any other “ism” seems just a passing fad. Good architecture will always transcend that momentary emotion.

INTERTECTONICS is the Doppelgänger of ATELIER ARSº.

It is the other side of our office that is responsible for matters related to the thinking on architecture. As active architects we do not recognize clear limits between theory, criticism, history and architectural project: we understand them as simultaneous reflective processes of our discipline. For us as in the history of architecture, the word tradition has a seminal importance. We consider modern architecture our closest tradition, not as a nostalgic revival of a supposed heroic modernity but as a conceptual and constructive platform where we can develop new architectures. In order to get deeper in this subject, we have developed the word “Inter tectonicity”. Heir of the word Intertextuality, which concerns the relationship of similarity in background and shape between different texts or, of the copresence between them; the word Intertectonicity describes the relationship of likeness in form, structure, construction materials and language between buildings of the same or different periods. The analysis of the inter tectonic relationships between buildings prevents merely stylistic comparison, to concentrate on the formal-constructive analysis of buildings, to facilitate the observation of buildings separated in time through a suprahistorical appreciation, revealing similarities and differences to obtain a wide vision of the architectural issues. For inter tectonic analysis, words like evocation, universality, type, dialogical, analog and memory are fundamental to the development of a critical base to produce or obtain knowledge. The value of difference, the sense of innovation is measured relative to the ability of an object to transform one architectural precedent or more; and it is in that same transformation where the interest for inter tectonic analysis reside.
