노블레스 컬렉션에서 1월 12일부터 2월 16일까지 캐스퍼 강 작가의 개인전 을 개최한다. 캐스퍼 강은 한지를 그을리거나 표백하고 긁어내는 등 물성을 변형시켜 새로운 추상 형태를 만들어내는 개성적인 작가다. 그의 작업은 모더니티를 입은 한국 전통 재료를 사용해 작가 고유의 조형미를 선사한다.

이번 전시에서 노블레스 컬렉션의 전시 공간은 캐스퍼 강 작품의 일부로, 무지의 흰 바람벽이 아닌 그의 관념을 담아내는 또 다른 캔버스로 표현된다.

캐스퍼 강 작가는 “전시 공간의 돌 바닥 면과 에폭시 바닥 면의 질감 차이, 높낮이가 다양한 층고 등 전시 공간의 특징적 건축 요소에서 모티브를 얻었다”고 전시 의도를 밝힌다. 평면 작업 앞에 놓인 입체 콘크리트 벽돌과 그 사이에서 새어 나오는 가느다란 빛, 옻칠한 한지가 나부끼며 일으키는 공기의 미세한 움직임 그리고 적막을 괴는 짙은 돌. 작가가 공간에 그려내는 여백은 예민하게 설계된 결과물인 셈이다. 감각을 단순화하고 작가가 그린 여백에 집중하다 보면 시선의 방향에 따라 매번 새로운 장면이 탄생한다. 공간에 풀어낸 내면의 충돌과 모순적 소재의 향연은 우리를 그의 고요하고 섬세한 세계로 안내한다. Noblesse Collection presents Casper Kang’s solo exhibition from January 12th to February 16th, 2024. Kang creates abstract forms by altering the materiality of Hanji (Korean mulberry paper) through transformative processes of burning, bleaching and scoring. By adopting a modern approach to traditional materials, the artist proposes a unique aesthetic vision.

In , the exhibition space becomes an integral part of the artist’s work, transcending the white cube to encompass a multidimensional canvas in which Kang materializes his vision. To this end, he probes diverse architectural motifs found within Noblesse Collection, including the textures of its rock and epoxy floors as well as its variable ceiling height. The negative spaces that Kang foregrounds are meticulously engineered; sculptural concrete bricks positioned in front of two-dimensional artworks allow a thin beam of light to pass between them, while the air vibrates with the fluttering movements of lacquered Hanji and a stone interrupts the pervasive stillness. By muting one’s senses and focusing on these negative spaces, countless scenes unfold on all sides of the viewer. In this moment, the conjunction of internal sensations and external conditions that occur amid Kang’s nuanced activation of contradictory materials reveals new perspectives into the artist’s tranquil and delicate world.
