시대를 앞서가는 유연한 사고방식과 실험적 도전 정신의 산실, 헤더윅 스튜디오(Heatherwick Studio)와 토마스 헤더윅(Thomas Heatherwick)의 창의적인 발상

창의성과 융합성이 결합된 신선한 발상, 상하이 BFC, 티사이드 발전소, 런던버스, 올림픽 성화대, 블라이기센

지난 2012년 런던 올림픽의 개막식과 폐막식에서 선보였던 올림픽 성화대(Olympic Cauldron) 역시 헤더윅 스튜디오의 작업이다. 청동 소재의 꽃잎 모양으로 디자인한 성화대는 각 국의 선수단이 들고 들어온 204개의 성화대는 천천히 하나로 모여들어 타오르며 장관을 연출했다.

토마스 헤더윅과 자동차 업체인 라이트버스가 협력하여 50년 만에 새롭게 디자인한 ‘런던 버스(New Bus for London)’ 역시 승객들의 편의성과 안전성 에너지 효율성 등 기능적인 문제를 해결했을 뿐 아니라 미적인 요소까지 반영한 헤더윅 스튜디오의 작업이다. 11m에 달하는 버스 길이는 모서리를 곡선으로 디자인했으며 2개의 계단과 3개의 출입문이 인상적이다.

런던의 가이스병원(Guy's Hospital) 역시 건물 입구의 보일러실을 가려주는 파사드 디자인이다. 보일러 슈트라고 불리는 입면 디자인은 108개의 모자이크식 세라믹 곡면 패널과 2.5m의 사각 패널을 통해 아름다운 건축미를 연출한다.

런던의 웰컴 트러스트 본사 건물의 30m 높이의 아트리움에 설치된 ‘블라이기센(Bleigiessen)’은 물이 떨어지면서 변화하는 모습을 형상화한 작품이다. 헤더윅 스튜디오는 차가운 물에 액체 상태의 금속을 떨어뜨리는 실험을 통해 수백 개에 달하는 무작위 형태들을 만들어 디자인했다. 마치 압정 제품을 연상케 하는 스펀 체어(Spun Chair)는 오목하게 파여 사람의 무게가 실리는 방향으로 기울어져 회전하는 가구 디자인이다.

중국 상하이 BFC(Bund Finance Center)는 포스터 앤 파트너스와 헤더윅 스튜디오가 공동으로 설계한 복합용도 건물로 180m의 랜드마크 타워와 부티크 호텔, 문화예술센터, 리테일점 등으로 구성된다. 전체적인 디자인은 구시가지와 새로운 금융지구 사이의 연계성이 강화되었으며, 특히 문화예술센터는 거대한 청동 튜브 커튼이 여러 겹으로 겹쳐 독특한 스크린 효과를 자아낸다.

재생 에너지를 활용한 바이오매스 발전소인 영국 티사이드 발전소(Teesside Power Station) 역시 대지에서 솟아오르는 상징적인 형태로 방음 기능을 갖추고 있으며 새로운 발전소의 방향성을 제시하고 있다. ANN
