어촌마을에 생기를 불어넣은 싱롱 방문자센터(Xinglong Visitor Center)

섬의 지역적 특색, 아열대 기후와 식생을 지그재그형의 독창적 건물에 반영해

중국 남중국해의 하이난성 어촌마을에 새롭게 들어선 싱롱 방문자센터는 지그재그 형태의 건축물로 눈길을 자아낸다. 외딴 시골마을은 이 건축물로 인해 개발의 바람을 타며 해안 휴양지로 변해가게 되었다. 설계를 맡은 아틀리에 알터 건축은 대대로 낚시를 통해 생계를 유지한 주민들의 삶과 아열대 지역의 기후와 식생을 조합하여 건물에 투영하고자 하였다. 건물 외부에 적용된 이중 외피 커튼월 구조는 섬의 전통 장인 기술을 적용한 것이며 가늘고 긴 기둥과 여러 갈래로 이어진 가지 구조는 섬의 열대성 나무에서 도출한 디자인이다.

사다리꼴로 길고 불규칙한 대지의 형상을 따라 건물은 지그재그형태로 배치되고 그 볼륨의 중심부에 주 기능들이 놓인다. 상대적으로 세 갈래로 펼쳐진 건물의 끝 부분들은 경량화 되고 주변 속으로 뻗어나가고 있다.

건물의 구성은 서측 도로면을 따라 평행한 듯 하지만 후퇴하고 약간의 사선으로 배치됨으로써 더욱 입체감을 형성한다. 자연스럽게 방문자센터와 도로 사이에 반 개방형 외부공간이 형성되고 양 측면으로 나있는 도로에서 볼 때 더욱 웅장한 모습으로 인지된다. 마치 작은 톱니와 커다란 톱니가 맞물리는 퍼즐 조각과도 같이 건물은 도시와 건축 간의 긴밀한 상호작용의 관계성을 튼실하게 엮어간다. 내부는 전시공간과 상점, 식당, 운영사무실 등의 다양한 프로그램을 수용한다.

이처럼 어촌마을에 대한 장소에 대한 기억과 섬의 지역적 특색을 반영하고자 한 싱롱 방문자센터는 하나의 좋은 건축물이 마을의 생기를 불어넣을 수 있다는 가능성을 무게감 있게 제시하고 있기에 충분하다. ANN

>> Atelier Alter Yingfan Zhang, a founding partner of Atelier Alter, received her Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union School of Architecture, her Master of Architecture in Urban Design form Harvard University. Prior to starting Atelier Alter, She worked for Atelier Raimund Abraham and RMJM North America. Her ongoing research focuses on architecture syntax and culture context. Xiaojun Bu(RA. AIA/ LEED AP), a founding partner of Atelier Alter, received his Bachelor of Architecture from Tsinghua University, his Master of Architecture II from Harvard University and is a licensed architect in the State of New York. His working experience includes SOM New York, and Standard Architecture. His practice focuses upon the connection between parametric and construction.

Founded in 2009, Atelier Alter is a pioneering inter-disciplinary practice based in New York and Beijing. Noted for deriving design from critical analysis of the site, Atelier Alter has been recognized by numerous awards, including IDOL Gold Prize 2014, 2013 Awards by Lighting Design Weekly, 2010 Excellence in Architecture Design of FuJian, etc. Atelier Alter focuses intensely upon culture facilities ever since the beginning of the practice. Atelier Alter won the competitions to build Qujing Culture Center in 2009, by transferring the metaphysical context of the site into an artistic yet tangible urban space of historic remembrance. The Senior Culture Center won by Atelier Alter in 2010 and completed in 2014, exploded the typological transformation of bamboo bungalow into public facility. The project has been published and featured by press of different parts of the world, including A+A, Russian Design Hub, I’Arca International, Cooper Publishing, HKPIP, il Nuovo Cantiere, Landscape Design, Archdaily, Designboom, among others. Besides culture projects, the portfolio of Atelier Alter ranges from small scale furniture design, to residential, commercial and educational facilities, up to large scale urban design, infrastructure and landscape planning. Whether it is architecture, landscape or urban project, the works of Atelier Alter strive for manifesting ideas that speak about humanity, ideas offering critic rather than imitation.
