희망의 대륙과 찬란한 농경문화를 담아낸 밀라노 박람회 중국관(China Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015)

보리가 바람에 흔들리는 황금색 물결의 파빌리온을 통해 공간의 장(Field)을 구현

2015 밀라노 엑스포에 특이한 형태의 파빌리온이 145개의 국가관 중에 단연 세계인의 주목을 받았다. 보리가 바람에 흔들리는 황금색 물결을 형상화한 이 파빌리온은 중국이 직접 디자인하여 해외에 진출한 첫 번째 엑스포로 남게 되었다.

이첸 루, 퀸웬 카이, 케네스 남궁이 이끄는 링크아크와 중국의 칭화대학교 연구팀의 공동 설계한 중국관은 주제인 ‘희망의 땅, 삶을 위한 음식(Land of Hope, Food for Life)’을 효과적으로 담아내고 있다. 평화의 땅을 배회하는 군중을 곡물이 자라는 드넓은 들판과 요동치는 파도 같은 지붕 모양으로 구현한 것이 꽤나 인상적이다.

파빌리온의 외형을 결정짓는 강력한 지붕은 하늘과 땅, 인간의 기념과 벼와 보리의 요소를 살림으로써 광활한 중국의 영토를 구현한 것이다. 지붕의 재료는 활모양으로 휜 목재 프레임을 만들고 그 위에 대나무 패널을 얹은 것으로 흡사 중국 전통건축의 기와지붕에 들보를 치켜든 모습을 떠올리게 한다.

주요 전시 공간을 덮고 있는 지붕은 스판이 36m이며 1,052개의 이형 대나무 지붕 패널과 노르웨이 가문비나무로 만든 글루램으로 구성된다. 파빌리온에 사용된 재료는 목구조, 대나무 지붕 패널, 밀짚 등은 모두 재생 가능한 마감으로 사용한 것이다.

전시관 내부는 고대 농업 고서, 농업 풍속과 농경방식들을 두루 전시해 관람객들에게 중국의 찬란한 농경문화를 직접 보여주고 체험할 수 있게 하고 있다. 특히 1만 여개의 벼 모양 발광다이오드(LED)로 만든 물결치는 논의 형상은 관람객들의 눈길을 오랫동안 머물기에 충분하다.

건축가 이첸 루(Yichen Lu)는 “의도적으로 주목을 끌기 위한 형태로 디자인하지 않았고 관람객들이 풍경에 몰두할 수 있도록 공간의 경험과 질적인 측면을 강조하고자 했다”고 파빌리온 디자인에 대해 설명한다. 완만한 경사를 이루고 있는 풍경과 도시의 스카이라인이 가지는 외형을 어우러지게 한 중국관의 지붕선은 도시와 자연이 조화 속에 공존할 수 있다는 희망의 메시지를 표현한 것이다.

이처럼 중국관은 광장에 놓인 하나의 건축으로서 파빌리온이라는 전형적인 관념을 거부하고 공간의 장(Field)을 생각하게 만들었다는 점에서 높이 평가되고 있다. ANN

>> YICHEN LU Yichen Lu is principal of New York City-based Studio Link-Arc, which he founded in 2011. He is also an associate professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Yichen is currently serving as chief architect for the China Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015, on behalf of Tsinghua University. The Pavilion won the Iconic Award “Best of Best” 2014 and German Design Award Special Mention 2015, both from the German Design Council. Other ongoing work includes two clubhouses, an archive library, and two large-scale master plans. Before establishing Studio Link-Arc, Yichen was a project manager at Steven Holl Architects, where he was in charge of the firm’s many award-winning projects in China. He also worked as a project architect at Gehry Partners, LLP, where he was responsible for the design of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, among other projects. Yichen has received numerous awards and honors for his work. In 2011, he was nominated as one of the 10 emerging young Chinese architects to provide an urban strategy proposal for the 2011 Chengdu Biennale. In 2007, he received the Robert Allen Ward Scholarship Award at the Yale School of Architecture. His 'Planless House at Manhattan' project won first prize in the 2006 International ‘Shinkenchiku’ Residential Design Competition. Yichen was the first prize winner of the Ikuo Hirayama Scholarship in 1999, aswell as the National Architecture Design Exhibition. Yichen Lu received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Tsinghua University Academy of Arts and Design, and a Master of Architecture degree from the Yale School of Architecture.
