미래를 생각하는 건강한 학교 환경, 프랑스 낭트 고등학교 ‘리세 드 낭트(Lycée de Nantes)’

환경과 사람을 존중하고자 하는 따뜻한 건축 언어가 깃들어 있어

고등학교 시절은 청소년기의 매우 중요한 시기이다. 그렇기에 15~20세 사이의 젊은 학생들이 대부분 시간을 보내게 되는 고등학교 시설 역시 학생들의 꿈과 교육을 효과적으로 실현할 수 있는 밝고 활기찬 공간이어여야 함은 자명하다. 프랑스 서부 루아르 강 하류에 있는 낭트 도시에 들어선 낭트 고등학교는 따뜻하면서도 건강한 학교시설의 모범적 사례로 평가되고 있다.

상부로 한껏 보이드된 특별한 영역인 만큼 복도형 아트리움은 학생들이 쉴 수 있는 휴식과 커뮤니케이션의 공간으로 두루 활용된다. 복도 곳곳에는 물품 보관실과 벤치, 의자, 조경시설물이 설치되어 있고 일부 공간에는 실내 조경으로 처리되어 있다. 또한 복도 영역은 1~3층까지의 동선을 효율적으로 연결시켜주며 각 층으로의 연결은 복도와 마주한 계단과 브리지를 통해 가능하다. 특히 학교공간에서 눈여겨 볼 점은 건물 구조 자체가 나무로 이루어져 있다는 점이다. 설계를 맡은 프랑소아 르끌레르건축은 단순한 선으로 가볍고 환경 친화적이면서도 음향과 향기에 적합한 재료로 나무를 선택했다고 밝힌다. “혁신보다는 환경과 사람을 존중하고자 하였다”고 밝히는 건축가의 말처럼 제대로 된 공간에 효율적인 재료를 적용함으로써 흔히 철과 유리로 대변되는 학교시설의 개념을 깨뜨리고자 하였던 것이다.

대지의 중심 영역에는 교육시설이 들어서 있고 가장자리로는 체육관과 식당, 기숙사시설을 포함한다. 교육시설의 남측과 동측으로 문화센터와 음악학교가, 북측으로는 야외 운동장이 들어서 있다. 교육시설 외관은 박공형으로 단순하지만 내부는 사뭇 길게 확장된 개방형 복도를 품고 있다. 건물 자체는 목구조를 택하고 있으며 기둥 위에 지어져 대지의 침수와 오염으로부터 자유로울 수 있었다. 학습공간은 자못 기다랗게 연속된 매스 탓에 5개의 영역으로 분절되어 있고 시설 한가운데 영역을 가로 지르는 커다란 아트리움형 복도가 각각의 기능들을 촘촘히 연결한다. 전체 영역을 아우르는 중심부에 자리한 아트리움 내부로는 유리 천창을 통해 자연광이 부드럽게 스며들어 밝고 화사한 공간색을 조성해준다.

지붕에 적용된 목구조의 표준화 덕택에 촉박한 시공 스케줄에서 대규모 시설인 체육관 역시 공기를 맞출 수 있었다. 바닥용 목재와 콘크리트의 조합은 웬만한 지진에도 충분히 견딜 수 있도록 설계되었다. 가벼움과 유연성, 그리고 콘크리트의 질량과 내구성이 지진을 견딜 수 있는 원동력이 된다. 리세 드 낭트는 최소한의 에너지를 사용하는 방식으로 환경적인 접근을 선보이고 있다.

프랑스 서부 낭트의 해양성 기후에 적합한 목재를 사용함으로써 신선한 소나무 향과 가볍고 따뜻하고 시각적 후각적으로 탁월한 결과를 이끌어내었다. 건물의 내부 통로의 절제된 부피감 역시 자연적인 환기를 돕기에 충분하다. 조경시설 역시 오감정원과 캠퍼스 공원, 겨울정원, 식당의 카페테라스 등의 실내공간과 도시경관 사이에서 용도의 명확함 보다는 합리적인 순환관계를 강조함으로써 학교공간을 더욱 활기차게 만들어준다. 이처럼 낭트 고등학교는 겉으로 보기에 단순하게 구성되어 있지만 철저히 사용자의 입장에서 공간을 구성하고 건강한 교육환경을 만들고자 하는 따뜻하고 지혜로운 건축언어가 녹녹히 담겨져 있다. For more than 20 years, a deep interest in the ‘architecture/urban planning’ combination has lied at the very core of our agency. Following one guiding principle: ‘Deal with what we have and transcend it’, we like to consider architecture in the city as a day-to-day adventure. This is why we clearly chose a project management type which integrates the ordinary as much as the exceptional, and where the architect/urban planner acts as an intermediary. What if we became travelers in our own city and reinvented urban lifestyles? ‘To last is to be able to change’. This concern is key for our projects, raising strong environment issues which we address with eagerness, carrying out, amongst others, a work on reversibility and energy performance but also on the use of wood as a super-efficient material. The completion of the National Institute of Sports, Expertise and Performance in Vincennes, the MacDonald Warehouse restructuration towards the third sector, or the Nantes Island International High School completed in September 2014 are just a few examples of this reflection.

‘LOVE THE CONTEXT’. Ever since we started this journey in architecture, we’ve been committed to initiating a fusion between landscape and architecture, site and plan, indoor and outdoor. These small-scale urban lifestyles are thought out as transition places. We tend to highlight the notions of comfort and use every time we want to build harmony between the community and the individual, or between an ordinary expression and a particular one. This enhancement takes shape in each of our projects, whether capital projects like the Savigny-sur-Orge High school, or offices and retail development projects like the Hôtel de Ville Walkways in Boulogne or mixed-use projects like the Heart of the Neighborhood Operation in Nanterre, with over 18,000 acres including shops, theaters, offices and homes.

‘Investment is dead. Long live reinvestment!’ Since 2008, we’ve been part of the brainstorming process on the Greater Paris at the AIGP, in which we affirm our need for a new paradigm. It is time to cast a fresh eye on the post-war boom heritage if we want to change it, in anticipation of new major infrastructures, and to recapture this desire for a city. This pragmatic approach shows through our studies for the Highway A4 Project, for the ‘La Defense Seine-Arche’ or for the reinvigoration of downtown Cergy-Pontoise. The agency also develops major urban projects like the Euromediterranean Perimeter Extension in Marseille or the Guide Plan for the Extended North East Paris(between the North and East train stations up to the inner ring road). The urban project falling inherently within an unfinished and fluctuating process, we affirm beliefs more than typical or systematical approaches : a necessary pragmatism, the significant role of urban mobility, a realistic and economically-wise standpoint.
