광장에 우뚝 서 있는 함부르크 시나몬 타워

항구도시의 스카이라인을 새롭게 만들어가는 날씬한 비례의 56m 타워, 특이한 형태로 강한 존재감을 내비춰

독일 북부의 최대 무역항인 함부르크 항구에 시나몬타워 별관이 들어섰다. 8,270㎡ 면적에 14층 규모의 건물은 마치 광장에 핀이 꽂혀있는 독특한 형상을 자아낸다.

독일 건축회사 볼스+윌슨이 지난 2006년 공모전에 당선되면서 2008년 별관 공사가 진행되었고(1st construction stage pavilion), 2015년(2nd tower)과 2016년(3rd Hafenamt)에 걸쳐 단계적으로 건물이 마무리되었다. 역사적인 건물은 오버시어즈 쿼터 종합계획에 따라 메가 블록 사이에서 살아남아 있었기에 더욱 존재감이 강화된다.

8년에 걸친 건설기간 동안 시나몬 타워는 현재의 독립적인 종탑을 포함해 날씬한 비례를 갖추게 되었다. 건물의 용도는 식당에서 주거시설로 바뀌었다. 13x16m의 바닥면적은 위로 갈수로 얇아진다. 56m 높이의 타워는 너비보다 4배나 높다.

겉으로 보기에 슬림하게 보이는 아파트는 복층으로 효율화를 추구하고 있다. 각각의 건물 2층에는 7세대와 위층에는 파노라마식 거실과 아래층에는 펀칭된 창문과 함께 침실이 마련되었다. 위층에 한 개의 3층의 아파트와 아래층에 단층 아파트 10세대가 지어졌으며, 130㎡ 면적의 4세대, 185㎡ 면적의 5세대, 300㎡ 면적의 한 세대가 지어졌다. 건물은 4.300㎡ 면적의 로비와 16.000㎥로 되어있다. 1층에 300㎡ 면적의 식당과 상업 공간이 마련되었다.

엄격한 법규를 지키기 위해 각 층마다 피난 계단이 만들어졌다. 실내에서 모든 창문을 닦을 수 있다는 점도 이러한 기준을 충족하고 있다. 외부의 멋진 경관은 지저분한 창문에 의해 흐릿해져서는 안 되었다. 거실 3면에는 방 높이의 창문을 통해 크루즈가 들어오는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그라데이션된 어두운 붉은색의 양극 처리된 알루미늄 파사드는 2008년 볼스위슨의 파빌리온과 상응한다. 이 파빌리온은 하버 마스터즈와 조화를 이룬다. 햇빛 아래 알루미늄 패널은 다양한 색깔을 띠고 있고 구름이 낀 날에는 심각한 파울 클레처럼 어두워 보이기까지 하다. 빛에 따라 성질을 달리하는 건물이며 함부르크의 스카이라인이 새롭게 변해가고 있다.

이러한 건물 파사드의 특별한 디자인을 인정받아 시나몬 타워 파빌리온은 2015년에 독일 파사드 어워드를 수상하였고, 2016년에는 BDA Hamburg Architectural Award 2016에서 당당히 1등을 획득하였다.

The Cinnamon tower was conceived as freestanding campanile – a pin on a piazza was the concept behind the premiated competition design by BOLLES+WILSON for the existing 19th century Harbour Masters Building.

A tower was not anticipated in the competition programme, but the jury agreed that a tower anchors the public functions around the only remaining historical building to survive between the mega blocks of the 'Overseas Quarter' master plan. The historic building would thus be more autonomous.

Slenderness is essential for a campanile. Over the course of its 8-year gestation this proportionality was respected – even while its function mutated from stacked restaurants to housing. The 13x16m floor plan tapers towards the top. With a height of 56 meters the tower is 4-times higher than it is wide.

How can such a thin chap be efficient? The organisational answer is duplex apartments. Originally the concept foresaw seven apartments, each on 2 floors, a panoramic living deck on the upper level and bedrooms with punched windows below. Precise market analysis led to a variation of this formula: one triplex apartment at the top and some 1-floor apartments at lower levels. Built were ten apartments, four with 130 sqm, five with 185 sqm and one with 300 sqm. The tower has a gross floor area of 4.300 sqm and a volume of 16.000 cubic metres. At the ground level is a restaurant / commercial unit of 300 sqm.

Strict high-rise regulations demanded an escape route from every floor via secure escape stair. The possibility to clean every window from the inside was also a criterion to be met. The spectacular view of the New Elbphilharmonie should not be blurred by smudgy windows. Room-high windows on three sides of the living deck also allow the tracking of incoming cruise ships.

Facade panels of anodized aluminium sheets in different gradations of dark red correspond to the patchwork of BOLLES+WILSON's neighbouring 2008 pavilion, the first realized component of the Harbour Masters ensemble. In sunlight these aluminium panels take on colourful nuances while on cloudy days they assume a darker, more serious Paul-Klee like nuance. This is a building that changes its character according to the incidence of light, a new figure on Hamburg's skyline.
