The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Expansion Project (Javits Expansion)

뉴욕 맨해튼 11번가에 위치한 미국을 대표하는 자비츠 컨벤션센터가 새롭게 리모델링되어 2021년 오픈했다. 1조 6천억 달러의 사업비가 들어간 자비츠 컨벤션센터는 11만㎡ 규모로 확장되어 지난 2021년 3월에 준공했다. 내부 시설은 가상·하이브리드 행사를 실시간 중계를 위한 방송스튜디오도 구축해 다변화되고 있는 마이스산업의 흐름을 반영한다. 1986년 처음 오픈한 이후 200여개의 수준 높은 산업전시회를 비롯해 다양한 무역전시회, 컨퍼런스, 이벤트 등이 열리는 뉴욕의 대표적인 컨벤션시설이다. 뉴욕주 경제의 원동력으로 작용하는 자비츠컨벤션센터의 확장을 통해 뉴욕의 지역경제 발전과 경쟁력을 높이고자 한 시도이다. 빌트투리드 프로젝트에는 자비츠컨벤션센터 증축을 비롯해 뉴욕 최대의 도심개발 프로젝트인 허드슨야드와 도시재생 사업 중의 하나인 하이라인파크도 포함된다.

새롭게 증축된 컨벤션센터는 발전되고 글로벌하게 확장하는 도시의 공간과 환경 안에서 시대의 변화와 고객의 니즈에 따라 요구되어지는 건물의 유용성과 확장성을 랜드마크적인 이미지로 담아내고 있다. 확장 규모는 뉴욕 34번가에서부터 40번가에 이르는 6블록의 전시장과 회의실, 연회장 건립을 포함하고 있다.

설계를 담당한 tvsdesign은 미국 애틀랜타에 위치하고 있으며 컨벤션센터와 마이스 디자인의 특화된 설계회사로 미국 전역과 중국, 남미의 유수한 도시의 컨벤션센터를 디자인한 곳이다. tvsdesign은 컨벤션센터와 MICE와 함께 협업하는 오피스 타워, 호텔 프로젝트를 진행하면서 디자인 엑셀런시(Design Excellency)로 칭해지며 글로벌한 건축디자인회사로 자리 잡고 있다. tvsdesign은 코로나 팬데믹의 상황 안에서 기존의 컨벤션센터가 뉴욕 시민들의 백신센터로 활용되고 있다는 점을 감안해 도시의 환경과 생활 패턴을 고려하고 지속 가능한 도시의 발전과 환경의 변화에 영향을 준다는 개념에서 컨벤션센터의 증축을 디자인했다.

자비츠컨벤션센터의 증축은 하이라인 파크와 허드슨야드 개발과 더불어 랜드마크적인 건축으로서 이미지를 높여주는 역할을 맡고 있다. 유리와 프리캐스트공법, 금속 재료가 한껏 조화를 이루고 있는 자비츠컨벤션센터의 크리스털 팰리스의 빛나는 외관처럼 확장된 새롭게 컨벤션센터 건물은 뉴욕의 꺼지지 않는 등불이 되어 글로벌 비즈니스의 허브 역할을 충실히 수행하게 될 것이다. ANN

ENR New York is pleased to reveal the 2022 Regional Best Projects winners. This year’s judges selected 21 projects in New York and New Jersey in the magazine's main market categories.

While those 2022 winners can be found in the list below, the Best Projects safety and sustainability award winners, which are juried by a separate group of safety and sustainability experts, will be announced soon in the ENR New York free e-newsletter. Finalists for this year’s ENR New York Project of the Year will also be announced in the newsletter soon.

Judges’ selection for this year’s overall Project of the Year from the Best Project-level winners listed below will be announced in the November issue of ENR New York and at the ENR New York’s Best Projects awards event on Nov. 18. This year’s winning projects in the main categories—listed at the bottom of this post—will also be profiled in depth in the November print issue of ENR New York.

Projects were evaluated on the ability of the project team to overcome challenges, contribution to the industry and community, safety, and construction and design quality. ENR New York selected winners from a large number of entries received, so projects that did not win can choose to submit next year.

Decisions on Best Project-level and Award of Merit category winners were at judges' discretion. In some categories, judges decided not to give an award.
