지리적 문화적 경계를 넘어 사회기반 시설과 문화를 전하는 새로운 유형의 건축물

사우스오스트레일리아의 주도인 애들레이드는 세인트빈센트만의 동쪽 언덕이자 마운트로프티산맥의 서쪽에 위치한다. 애들레이드는 사우스오스트레일리아주에서 가장 오래된 도시로서 오스트레일리아의 문화적·경제적 중심인 동시에 산업문화의 주도적 역할을 맡는다.

15,000㎡ 규모로 계획한 애들레이드 컨템퍼러리는 지리적, 문화적 경계를 넘어 현대적 호주 예술을 경험할 수 있는 색다른 곳이다. 설계를 맡은 BIG는 도시와 조경이 절묘하게 융합된 유기적인 건축을 제안했다. 7개의 U자형 매스가 서로 엮여 가든과 전시, 선큰, 램프, 캐노피, 다이닝, 팜하우스 등의 다양한 공간감을 형성한다.

슬로프 처리된 램프를 따라 이동할 수 있는 연속된 상부의 루프 테라스에서는 다채로운 풍경을 감상할 수 있다. 북쪽 테라스에서는 공공 광장과 보타닉 가든으로 시각적 확장을 취하며, 차분하면서도 상징적인 입지를 구축하고 있다. 이처럼 애들레이드 현대 갤러리는 단순히 건축의 경계를 넘어 사회기반시설과 문화를 전하는 새로운 유형의 건축물로 손색이 없다.

The Adelaide Contemporary seeks to reconsider the orthodoxy of how Australian art is curated and experienced through the juxtaposition of art produced contemporaneously across geographical and cultural boundaries. We propose to embrace this agenda by incorporating the multiple interests surrounding the site to create an inclusive architecture – a seamless merging between the city and the gardens with a diversity of pragmatic yet exciting spaces for art in-between. Appearing as an extension of the city to the west and the pavilions in a gardens to the east, the Contemporary will enlarge both public realm and the Botanic Garden as an experienc in the ebbs and flows of hard- and soft-scape on its rooftops. To the north, the Adelaide Contemporary gently steps down in transition to the gardens and the Palm House. On the North Terrace, it will establish a respectful yet iconic presence with a public plaza and expanded entrance to the Botanic Garden. The Adelaide Contemporary will be a new breed of architecture as social infrastructure and culture bearer across boundaries.
