빙산의 유영에서 착안한 상하이 포츠 1961 플래그 스토어

빛을 머금고 반사시키는 유리블록의 독특한 매스와 패턴의 조합

상하이의 창더로와 난징서로의 고급 상업지구 교차로에 포츠 1961의 플래그 스토어가 들어섰다. 건물의 외관을 구성하는 유리 매스는 표준형의 300mm×300mm와 300mm×300mm×300mm 코너형 두 가지로 구분된다. 건축가는 바다에 자유롭게 떠다니는 빙산의 유영에서 영감을 얻었으며, 포츠 1961의 패션 브랜드 기원과 발전을 조합하여 미래 비전을 제시하고 있다.

건물은 코너 대지에 위치하며 보행자들의 동선에 따라 다양한 모습으로 인지된다. 건물의 입면을 구성하는 화이트한 색감과 반복된 유리블록의 패턴은 주위 시선을 한눈에 끌기에 충분하다. 보는 각도에 따라 다양한 표정을 연출하는 입면은 형태와 재료, 기술의 변형을 함유하면서 그 속에 전통적이고 동시대적인 해석, 디자인의 실험 가능성을 제시하고 있다. 두 가지 유형의 유리 매스는 측면과 정면, 캐노피 등에서 리듬감 있게 조합되어 독특한 구조미를 선사한다. 수자 광택이 있는 공예 유리 제품인 새틴 유리블록과 스테인리스 재료를 사용함으로써 사뭇 복잡한 도시에 정갈한 이미지를 제공한다.

포츠 1961의 모습은 번화한 도시의 흐름에 맞추어 은은히 LED 빛을 밝히기도 하고 낮 동안에는 미세하게 햇빛을 반사시키면서 주위를 환기시킨다. 건물 자체는 그리 크지 않지만 창의적인 아이디어를 머금고 도심 속의 이색적인 빙산 파빌리온이 되어 낮은 자세로 시민들을 마주한다. 상하이 도심지에 들어선 이 색깔 있는 포츠 1961의 모습을 바라보는 시민들의 발걸음은 한껏 경쾌함으로 묻어난다.

Located at a major high-end commercial district at the intersection of Changde Road and Nanjing West Road in Shanghai, a new façade is created for the fashion house Ports 1961’s flagship store. The facade is representative of the future vision of Ports 1961 that brings together its origin and evolution. The design evokes the idea of a landform that resembles an iceberg floating freely in the ocean; the building having a sense of being undulated, expanding and contracting, as if shaped by its environment. The facade demonstrates the possibilities of design experimentation, showing the transformation of form, material and technology, while still bringing aspect of both traditional and contemporary interpretations. The structural grandeur of the building attracts attention while its ambivalent nature is uniquely changing with its surroundings.

The facade is composed of two types of glass blocks; a standard 300mm×300mm glass block and a custom 300mm×300mm×300mm corner glass block. Unlike most glass block masonry constructions, it is not limited to one vertical plane. The combinations of the two types of glass block create a sculpted three-dimensional façade exhibiting cantilevered structures. By incorporating innovative structural engineering and inventing a new joining system in the block itself, an elaborate ornamental stepping canopy is achieved that naturally angles to the flow of pedestrian and allows for four bow windows to be visible from all directions.

The usage of satin glass block and shot blasted stainless steel material is in great contrast to the chaotic city. During the day, it mutes the surroundings, while subtly reflecting the sunlight. In the evening, the view is icy and crisp, and the surface illuminates with embedded LED lights integrated into the joints of the masonry. The differing geometries and changing perspectives of the facade expresses the transformative nature of the city and the people of Shanghai.
