세 개의 다이내믹한 브리지로 연결된 주상복합아파트

효과적인 자연 채광과 공기 순환을 유도한 계단형 입면 구성과 입체형 브리지를 통해 입주민들의 커뮤니티를 높여줘

싱가포르 교외 중심가인 비샨에 38층 규모의 특별한 주상복합 아파트가 들어서 눈길을 자아낸다. 전형적인 단일 형태의 주거 개념을 벗어나 공동체를 기반으로 둔 스카이 해비타트는 프라이비트한 테라스와 발코니, 공동정원을 포함한 3차원 공간으로 지어진 아파트이다. 이 주상복합 아파트는 고밀도 주거생활과 공동체, 주변 환경, 정원, 햇빛의 휴머니즘과의 균형을 추구한다. 마치 높다란 계단을 연상케 하는 입면은 가급적 위아래로 많은 자연광을 끌어들이기 위해 시도된 디자인이다.

주거 공간 내부로 공기의 원활함을 한껏 이끌어 내는 스카이라인과 입면을 통해 각각의 세대들은 자연적으로 환기되고 멋진 풍경을 바라볼 수 있다. 특히 두동의 타워 사이를 가로지르는 3개의 입체형 브리지는 계단 형태의 건물을 서로 이어주는 동시에 거리와 정원, 테라스의 상호작용을 돕는다. 브리지 공간은 입주자들의 여가와 모임의 장소로도 두루 활용된다. 하늘 정원을 의미하는 듯 상부의 브리지에는 수영장이 마련되어 있어 하늘 위에서 수영을 하는 듯한 착각을 불러일으키게 만든다.

건물의 전체적인 형태는 개방적인 구조로 공기순환이 효과적이고 햇빛이 건물 안으로 깊게 투과할 수 있도록 돕는다. 계단 형태의 기하학적인 구조는 모든 집이 프라이비트한 바깥 공간을 가질 수 있도록 한다. 이는 더 인도적이면서 친근한 도시 분위기를 만들어 낸다. 주차 포디움 선큰 위의 1층은 사이트의 70퍼센트 이상이 무성한 정원으로 조성되어 있다. 이곳에는 야외 이벤트 공간, 수영장, 테니스장 그리고 산책로가 제공된다.

이스라엘 출신의 캐나다 국적의 건축가 모쉐 사프디는 인도적인 건축 언어를 선보이는 세계적인 건축가이자 계획가, 이론가, 교육자이며 저자이다. 1938년 출생으로 캐나다에 가족이 이주하면서 정착하게 된다. 맥길 대학에서 건축학위를 취득하고 1964년 필라델피아에서 루이스칸의 도제 생활을 거친다. 이후 몬트리올로 돌아와 사프디종합건축을 설립하고 캐나다 세계 박람회의 마스터플랜을 맡았다. 샤프디를 더욱 유명하게 만든 조립식 아파트 ‘해비타트 67’은 1967년 캐나다 몬트리올에 지은 조립식 아파트로 큐빅을 기본 단위로 삼아 블록을 쌓고 총 354개의 큐브가 연결시킨 주거 공간이다.

모쉐 샤프디는 미국건축가협회 명예회원, 이안 우드너 건축도시디자인 교수, 하버드대학교 건축대학 도시계획과 학과장 등의 경력을 갖고 있으며 캐나다 훈장을 수상한 바 있다. 사프디는 며느리가 한국인이기에 종종 한국을 찾는다. 지난 2010년 한국을 찾은 사프디는 “한국의 전통 건축양식을 지닌 건물을 보존하고 주변 환경과 어우러지는 개발을 추구해야 한다”고 한국의 아파트 건축형태에 대한 충고를 아끼지 않았다. 사프디의 건축언어는 지역과 사회, 문화적 요소들을 반영하고 있으며 인간 본연의 필요와 열망을 충족시키고자 한다. 사프디종합건축은 문화, 교육, 공공기관, 복합도심개발, 공원, 신도시 개발, 도시 마스터플랜 등을 수행하며 세계적으로 성장하고 있다. 주요 프로젝트로는 예루살렘 구도시 도심센터 마밀라 알로브센터, 상가포르 복합리조트 마리나 베이 샌즈, 인도 푼잡의 시크교 국립박물관 칼자 전통문화유산 기념관, 워싱턴 DC몰의 미국평화본부, 예루살렘의 국립고고학 캠퍼스, 미국 캔자스시티 복합개발단지 웨스트엣지와 카우프만 공연예술센터, 미국 아칸소주 벤턴빌의 크리스탈 브리지 박물관 등이 있다.

Located in the neighborhood of Bishan, a residential area in the suburban heartland of Singapore, this 38-story residential complex explores the balance of high-density living with humanistic concepts of community, landscape, gardens, and daylight.

Breaking down the scale of typical singular tower residential development, the community-based solution of Sky Habitat is a three-dimensional matrix of homes with private terraces, balconies, and common gardens, bringing landscape into the air and maintaining porosity on the skyline. The complex’s strong stepped form recalls the community texture of ancient hillside developments and provides for lush vertical greenery, multiple orientations relative to the sun, naturally ventilated units, and generous views, all without compromising planning or structural efficiency.

Three bridging sky gardens link the two stepping towers and create a series of interconnected streets, gardens, and terraces in the air, which provide a variety of areas for common recreation and congregation. As a result, the overall mass is porous and open, allowing breezes to flow through and daylight to penetrate deep into the structure. The stepping geometry allows every residence multiple orientations and a private outdoor space, resulting in a more humane and delicate urban fabric.

At the ground plane, above a sunken parking podium, more than 70 percent of the site is developed into a series of lush gardens, which offer additional outdoor event areas, swimming pools, a tennis court, and walking paths.
