필라델피아 네이비야드와 센트럴 그린파크와의 조화로움을 추구

LEED 골드를 획득한 오피스 건물, 홀 내부에서는 잠망경처럼 네이비야드를 조망하는 채광창이 마련되어 있어

미국 필라델피아 해군 공원 내에 들어선 건물은 네이비야드와 센트럴 그린파크 사이에 위치한다.

해군의 이미지를 상징적으로 드러내듯 흰색의 직사각형 건물은 인트리피드 애비뉴와 노르망디 플레이스가 만나는 지점에 다소곳이 자리한다.

1200 인트리피드는 로버트 스턴의 장방형 도시 블록 마스터플랜과 미국의 대표적인 조경디자이너인 제임스 코너가 디자인한 상징적인 원형 센트럴 그린파크 사이에 접한 LEED 골드 오피스 건물이다.센트럴 그린파크는 원형의 조경이 반복된 구조로 지속가능한 녹색 에너지와 환경 친화적 디자인을 엿볼 수 있고, 이는 1200 인트리피드의 디자인을 결정짓는 강력한 상징 요소로 작용한다.

건물의 외관을 강력하게 특징짓는 이중 커브의 파사드는 공원에 반응하여 마치 충격파가 물결치듯 공원의 순환도로를 향해 부드럽게 휘어진 형태를 보인다. 외관은 프리캐스트 콘크리트로 지어졌다. 공원과 접한 이중 커브의 파사드와 달리 다른 면은 도시 그리드에 따라 직각으로 돌아와 네이비 야드의 마스터플랜과 부합하고 있다.

건물의 중앙을 수직으로 관통하는 보이드된 중앙홀은 네이비야드의 해상 히스토리를 반영하는 동시에 상부 톱라이트를 통해 자연 채광을 내부로 끌어 들인다. 이와 동시에 경사진 거울을 통해 마치 잠망경처럼 필라델피아 네이비야드의 전망이 엘리베이터 로비홀로 투영된다. 1200 인트리피드를 찾은 방문객들과 직원들은 부두에 정박해 있는 예비 함선을 조망함과 동시에 센트럴 그린파크를 에워싸는 방식으로 들어선 건물로 자연스럽게 접근할 수 있게 된다.

1200 Intrepid is a LEED Gold office building shaped by the encounter between Robert Stern’s master plan of rectangular city blocks and James Corner’s iconic, circular Central Green Park.

The building’s double curved, precast concrete facade bows inwards to create a generous urban canopy that responds to the ‘shock wave’ of the park’s circular running track, activity pods and planting vignettes - rippling outwards like rings in water to invade the building’s footprint. Shaped by the city grid, the cornice and remaining elevations return to the orthogonal design of the Navy Yard's master plan, forming the building's double curve and melding the neighbourhood’s two dominant forms.

Referencing the Navy Yard’s maritime history while providing much needed natural light, a functioning periscope penetrates the core of the building, projecting views of the Navy Yard basin into the center of the elevator lobby. Visitors and employees can admire the mothballed ships sitting in the adjacent docks while embracing Central Green Park - connecting the building and its inhabitants to their surroundings.
