Concrete a multi-functional cultural space at Alserkal Avenue, Dubai UAE

두바이 알세르칼 거리에 새롭게 들어선 복합문화센터 콘크리트
 

가변적인 전시 공간을 연출하는 4개의 무빙월과 개폐가 가능한 슬라이딩 도어를 통해 공간 확장성을 추구해

콘크리트는 두바이의 대표적인 문화예술거리로 성장한 알세르칼 거리(Alserkal Avenue)에 들어선 복합 문화 센터이다. 한때 공장과 카센터가 밀집되어 있던 알쿠오즈(Al Quoz) 지역은 지난 2007년부터 알세르칼 애비뉴가 형성되고, 편집숍, 카페, 갤러리, 디자이너 작업 공간들이 속속들이 들어서면서 두바이의 대표적인 문화 요지로 변모되었다. 알쿠오즈 산업지역의 알세르카 애비뉴에는 현재 25개의 현대미술 갤러리와 예술 공간이 들어서 있다.

2017년 3월 16일 공식적으로 개장한 콘크리트의 설계는 세계적인 건축가 렘 쿨하우스가 설립한 건축회사 OMA가 맡았다. OMA는 4개의 창고 세트를 변형시켜 새로운 개념의 문화센터 공간을 디자인했다. 1250㎡ 면적의 다용도 공간은 전시회, 강연, 패션쇼 및 사교 모임을 개최할 수 있는 곳으로, 내부는 8.1m 규모의 4개의 무빙월을 통해 가변적인 공간으로 변모한다. 전시 공간을 다이내믹하게 연출하는 움직이는 벽은 슬라이딩과 회전식 벽을 통해 이벤트의 유형에 따라 평면 활용의 유연성을 도와준다. 이벤트 유형에 따라 70㎡에서 900㎡ 크기의 작은 전시실을 만들 수도 있다. 전시실에는 풍부한 자연 채광을 유입시키기 위해 두 개의 선형 채광창이 가변형 벽 위에 설치되어 있다.

기존의 산업시설을 다기능 문화센터로 탈바꿈시켰기에 외장 셀은 맞춤형 스프레이 콘크리트 방식으로 통해 차별화를 추구했다. 외부로 자연스러운 불빛이 새어나오는 외관은 필요에 따라 개폐가 가능한 슬라이딩 도어를 설치하여 내외부의 연속성을 효과적으로 강화시켰다. 4개로 활짝 열리는 입구의 반투명의 폴리카보네이트 도어를 열면 내부의 흐름은 건물로 둘러싸인 중앙 마당과 곧바로 연결된다. 이로써 공간은 자연스럽게 외부 마당과 엮이며, 대규모 미술 전시회와 강의 및 컨퍼런스, 패션 및 영화 이벤트, 사교 모임에 이르기까지 다양한 행사를 수용 할 수 있는 유연한 공간이 된다.

알세칼 애비뉴의 설립자인 아부델모넴 빈 이사 알세르칼은(Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal)은 “아랍에미리트의 예술과 문화와 함께 성장해온 알세르칼 애비뉴에 콘크리트의 개관은 지역의 문화 발전의 일환으로 새로운 이정표를 세웠다”고 밝혔다. 알세르칼 애비뉴의 빌마 저큐트(Vilma Jurkute) 이사는 “OMA 팀은 도시 건축에 대한 독특한 미적 기준과 사려 깊은 접근 방식을 도입했으며 이를 통해 아랍에미리트의 진화하는 건축과의 적극적인 대화를 시도했다”고 말했다. OMA의 창업 파트너인 렘 쿨하스는 “두바이는 OMA 업무에 커다란 영향을 미쳤던 도시 중 하나로 이곳에 첫 번째 프로젝트를 구현하게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각하며, 콘크리트에 굳이 새로운 형태를 도입하지 않고 기존의 건물에 기능적인 부분을 덧붙이면서 조화를 추구했다”고 밝혔다.

프로젝트 책임자이자 OMA 파트너인 이야드 알사카(Iyad Alsaka)는 “이번 프로젝트를 통해 OMA는 가급적 중립적이고 유연한 내부 구조를 구획하면서 기존 건물을 주변 건물과 차별화될 수 있도록 변모시켰다”고 전했다. OMA가 아랍에미리트에 처음으로 설계한 콘크리트 프로젝트는 이야드 알사카(Iyad Alsaka)와 카베 다비리(Kaveh Dabiri)가 주도적으로 이끌었으며, 인테리어와 엔지니어링은 두바이의 지역 회사에서 맡아 진행했다.

이처럼 콘크리트는 대규모 공공행사는 물론 미술 전시회, 공연 및 회의를 진행할 수 있는 다기능 복합 문화 센터를 표방하며, 알세르칼 애비뉴의 문화적 기대치를 충족시켜 주고 있다.

Concrete, a multi-functional cultural space designed by OMA for Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue, officially opened yesterday to the press and public. Located in Dubai’s Al Qouz industrial area, Alserkal Avenue was founded in 2007 with the aim of promoting cultural initiatives in the region. Since then, it has become Dubai’s most important art hub with twenty-five galleries and art spaces. Concrete addresses the district’s growing need for a centrally located public space which can host a diverse program.

The 1,250㎡ former warehouse provides a multi-purpose space to accommodate public events, exhibitions, performances and lectures, and continues OMA’s work in the preservation and repurposing of existing buildings.

Allowing multiple configurations, the industrial-scale space has 8m high ceilings, pivoting and sliding walls, and a translucent façade with full-height doors which can seamlessly connect Concrete’s interior with the complex’s large, central courtyard. Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal, patron and founder of Alserkal Avenue: “Over the last decade, Alserkal Avenue has grown and evolved organically with the arts and culture scene of the United Arab Emirates. The introduction of Concrete marks a new milestone as part of the cultural advancement of the region.” Vilma Jurkute, director of Alserkal Avenue: “The OMA team has brought their unique aesthetic and thoughtful approach to urban architecture to the Avenue, and, in doing so, they have created a space that has started a dialogue for architectural evolution in the UAE.” Rem Koolhaas, OMA’s founding partner: “Dubai is one of the cities that has had a deep impact on our work, and I am very happy that this particular building is our first effort here. In Concrete, we are not introducing a new shape but instead were able to infiltrate an existing building with an arts institution. This building is totally produced in Dubai; it is not a foreign ideal, and that I think is significant.”

Iyad Alsaka, OMA’s partner in charge of the project: “The Gulf is an important region for OMA, and we are happy to have been able to collaborate with an organisation like Alserkal Avenue, whose vision is so similar to our own. With this project we wanted to keep the interior as neutral and flexible as possible, while transforming the existing exterior so that it would stand out from the surrounding buildings.”

This is OMA’s first built project in the United Arab Emirates, and was and led by Iyad Alsaka and Kaveh Dabiri. The interior design and engineering was completed by Dubai-based companies.
