UIA 2017 서울 국제스튜디오 킥 오프

도시 회복을 주제로 국내외의 건축학과 학생들이 교류하고 생각의 틀을 깨는 새로운 교육적 접근을 엿볼 수 있어

UIA 2017 서울 국제스튜디오의 킥 오프가 지난 2월 7일 서울 동대문디자인플라자(DDP)에서 열렸다. 국내 5개 대학, 국외 10개 대학이 참여한 이번 행사는 서울 국제 스튜디오(SIS)에서 선발된 약 70명의 국제 스튜디오 참가 학생들이 국내외 건축전문가로 구성된 멘토의 도움을 받아 여름 국제스튜디오 프로그램에 참가한다. 서울국제스튜디오의 참여대학은 영국, 덴마크, 이탈리아, 터키의 유럽 대학들과 서울대, 연세대, 단국대, 한양대(ERICA), 홍익대의 국내 대학 학생들이 참여하였다. 외국에 있는 학생들은 각 나라의 사이트를 도시 회복의 관점에서 연구하는 2주간의 스튜디오로 진행되며, 이를 SNS나 디지털 플랫폼을 이용, 아이디어를 공유하게 된다. 이 과정에서 참여 학생들이 도시 회복이라는 큰 주제 속에서 문화를 바탕으로 서로 다른 도시 회복의 방법론을 교류하고 이해하는 것이 프로그램의 주된 목적이다. 이날 행사는 단국대 건축대학 정재욱 교수의 환영사를 시작으로 한양대 ERICA 건축학부 김소영 교수의 서울 국제스튜디오에 대한 전반적인 소개와 방향성, 게스트 렉처로 이화여대 Klaas Kresse 교수, 위진복 건축인, 최정화 미술가가 참여하여 참여 학생들의 높은 관심과 열정을 모아주었다.

두 번째 국제스튜디오 프로그램은 섬머 스쿨로 8월 말에 2주간의 스튜디오 프로그램으로 진행된다. 여름 국제스튜디오 프로그램에는 2017년 1학기에 선정된 7개의 글로벌 대학과 국내 5개 내외의 대학에서 서울의 6개 사이트를 가지고 도시 회복에 대한 구체적 방안을 제안하며 완성된 작품은 UIA 행사에 전시될 예정이다. 프로그램의 진행 과정 속에서 외국의 대학과 한국의 대학이 서로 교류하여 ‘Soul of City - Resilient City’라는 주제로 워크숍이 마련된다. “이번 여름 국제스튜디오 프로그램(Summer Studio)는 각 학교에서 갇혀있던 학생들을 다른 학교, 다른 문화권과 교류하며 생각의 틀을 깨는 과정으로 볼 수 있으며, 더 나아가 학생들이 글로벌한 생각을 가질 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다”는 것이 UIA 2017 서울국제스튜디오 정재욱 위원장은 설명한다. 행사를 주관한 UIA 2017 서울세계건축대회 학생 및 젊은 건축가위원회는 전체 프로그램을 통해 논의되었던 내용들을 묶어 책으로 제작하여 배포할 예정이며, 학생 작품들은 UIA 본 행사기간인 2017년 9월 3일에서 10일에 코엑스에서 마련된다고 밝혔다.

Soul of City_ The theme for the 2017 Congress is “Soul of City” and set-out to enhance the unique features of the city of Seoul. The city of Seoul, as many other new megacities, has seen cultural heritage and natural characters specific to the city over-shadowed by basic urban demands over the last decades. The obvious contrast of new and old side by side is significant in Seoul. While many mega-cities are experiencing continued rapid growth and densification, the population of Seoul is declining. At the same time, due to increased property prices young families are moving to the suburbs and small industrial neighborhoods are changing character while the city center is slowly being deserted by residents.

Resilient Cities_ By 2050 about 70% of the world’s population will live Win urban areas and already today does about 40% of CO2 emissions come from the building industry. Cities are challenged by this urbanization and while decision makers are struggling with everyday demands to accommodate for their citizens, architects have the responsibility to create solutions which provide for more people with fewer resources. Successful sustainable urban communities work as a network and benefit from their collaborative efforts tailored to their cultural and climatic settings. Studies prove that good urban design, based on research and evidence, can lift the spirit of citizens while encouraging social interaction and fostering civil society. Our aim is to move the discussion forward from categorizing and preserving tangible qualities towards establishing tools for how cultural heritage and natural characters can create value and become catalysts for environmental, social and economic changes. We will look at how cultural heritage, specific to a community and setting, can be a catalyst and foster sustainable change by for example looking at local and traditional building methods, management practices, social structures, awareness, consumption patterns etc.
