2개의 크고 작은 산과 1천 개의 콘크리트 기둥 구조, 400개의 테라스로 조합된 ‘상하이 1천 트리(1,000 Trees in Shanghai)’

상하이 M50 예술지구 부근에 400개의 테라스와 1,000개의 콘크리트 기둥 구조로 세워진 복합 용도 건물이 들어섰다. 건물은 흡사 거대한 산의 나무를 연상케 한다. 300,000 평방미터 규모에 2개의 크고 작은 산 모양으로 쌓아 올린 모습은 미래의 도시에서 있을 법한 특이한 형상을 자아낸다. 언뜻 보면 고대 바빌론의 공중정원을 닮아있기도 하다. 1천 트리 프로젝트를 디자인한 헤더윅 스튜디오의 토마스 헤더윅 대표건축가는 “인접한 쑤저우 강을 배경삼아 들어선 천 트리는 거대한 상자형 건물로 더 작은 매스로 나누어져 있다”며, “새로 들어서는 건물이 주변의 예술지구와 공원 사이의 경계를 줄여주고 자연적인 균형감을 맞추기 위해 통합적인 식재 계획을 시도했다”고 설명한다. 이처럼 1천 트리 프로젝트는 좁고 길쭉한 대지의 제약 조건을 극복하고 헤더윅 스튜디오의 창의적인 면모를 반영함으로써 주변 환경과 조화를 도모한 획기적인 디자인으로 다가온다.

Heatherwick Studio has designed a mountainous mixed use plan for Shanghai's main arts district. Named M50, the 300,000-square-meter project was conceived as "a piece of topography" that takes the shape of "two tree-covered mountains" populated by "400 terraces" and "1,000 structural columns."

“Normally, the large-scale projects that we are quite used to seeing have big boxes, and the role of the designer is figuring out what pattern of architectural wrapping paper to put on these boxes,” said Thomas Heatherwick. “We wondered if there was a way to make better working spaces by also making access to outdoors.”

The 15-acre development, currently under construction with completion scheduled for 2018, is sited next to a public park. It is split by a narrow strip of government property and incorporates a number of historic buildings.

“Existing planning permission for two conventional shopping mall blocks had been granted for the site, but a huge, boxy building would need to be broken into smaller pieces in order to fit in with the surroundings,” explain Heatherwick Studio. “The integrated planting acts as a natural balancing element and the building’s edges are lowered to minimise the impact where it meets the art district and park, reducing the discernible threshold between them.”
