135m에 달하는 풍차모양의 런던 아이(London Eye)를 설계한 것으로 잘 알려진 런던의 설계사무소 막스 바필드 아키텍츠(Marks Barfield Architects)가 노스 웨스트 케임브리지에 새로운 케임브리지대 초등학교를 디자인했다. 이 초등학교는 150헥타르에 달하는 노스 웨스트 캠브리지 개발의 일환으로 완성된 최초의 건물로 중정을 가운데 두고 원형의 배치로 뻗어 나가는 특징을 지닌다. 학교는 중정과 적극적인 소통을 이어주는 오픈된 3개의 개방된 공간과 서클을 기반으로 서로 긴밀하게 연결된 원형 클러스터와 78개의 유치원을 포함한다. 이 초등학교는 영국 최초의 UTS(University Training School) 자격을 인정받고 있으며, 초등학생들의 교육, 교사 연수, 그리고 대학의 교육 학부와 연결된 교육 연구를 수행하게 된다.
막스 바필드 아키텍츠의 줄리아 바필드(Julia Barfield) 이사는 “케임브리지 초등학교는 열린 마음과 연구 정보 및 협업 접근 방식을 통해 디자인이 전개되었으며, 사이트의 콘텍스트와 학교의 교육 요구를 평가하는 프로세스를 기반으로 케임브리지의 교육 기풍과 건축이 조화를 이루는 공간을 얻어낼 수 있었다”고 밝혔다. 케임브리지대학 초등학교의 제임스 비덜프(James Biddulph) 교장은 “학교 선생님들이 건축가와 함께 자신의 학교를 디자인할 수 있는 기회는 흔치 않은 것이며, 교사와 학교 지도자, 학계의 토론을 통해 아이들이 원하는 최상의 결과를 충족시킬 수 있었다”고 설명한다.
이러한 케임브리지대학 초등학교의 디자인에 대한 새로운 도전은 모든 어린이들에게 훌륭한 교육 경험을 제공하고자 하는 실천적 취지에서 비롯된 것이다. 건축가는 견고한 재료와 높은 수준의 자연 채광, 자연 환기, 저에너지 사용을 통해 단순하면서도 실용적인 건물로 디자인하였다. 학교의 공동체 의식의 제고와 집단의 민주적인 융합을 위해 원형 중정을 중심으로 크고 작은 3개의 블록으로 공간을 나누었다. 이러한 프로그램은 분할된 배움의 거리(The Articulated Classroom, The Shared Learning Street), 6개의 클래스와 3개의 클러스터(Six Class Clusters), 효율적인 환경(Efficiency of circulation), 학교의 심장 역할을 엮어가는 중심의 통일된 창의 공간(Creating a unified whole)로 요약된다. 중정을 중심에 두고 원형으로 모아진 교실과 도서관, 다목적홀, 식당, 유치원, 복도 등의 공간들은 서로 촘촘히 엮이며 민주적인 학습 공동체를 형성하게 만든다. 서측의 주출입구에서 시작된 열린 중정을 가로질러 동측의 부출입구(Outdoor project space)로 숲으로 기다란 시각적 트임과 녹지축을 연결한다. 서클 매스 바깥쪽으로는 물놀이장, 모래 구덩이, 클래스 가든, 잔디 마당, 습지대, 게임 코트 등의 외부공간이 놓여 아이들의 활동성을 높여주고 있다.
전체적인 디자인 개념은 ‘학교 내 학교(schools within a school)’라는 모델을 활용하였다. 각각의 모델에는 6살에서 11살 사이의 혼합 연령층의 커뮤니티와 교사들을 위한 복지 및 교육지원의 기능이 충족된다. 이러한 교실 클러스터와 배움의 거리를 공유하는 특별한 룸은 전체적으로 커뮤니티의 원활함을 도와준다. 연령대가 다른 아이들이 서로 가깝게 어울리고 배움으로써 모든 어린이들은 열린 공간에서 학습 공동체로서의 유대감을 형성할 수 있다. 모든 교실은 계획한 대로 문을 열지 않으면서 서로 연결되어 있는 것이 특색 있다. 교실 한쪽은 러닝 스트리트로 매끄럽게 연결되고, 다른 한쪽은 야외 학습 공간으로 문을 통해 연결된다. 중정은 케임브리지의 유서 깊은 쿼드에서 영감을 얻은 것으로 놀이터와 그 너머의 풍경으로 이어지는 것이 다른 점이다.
중정과 교실을 원형으로 이어주는 둥근 회랑형 캐노피는 “우리는 모두 같은 하늘 아래 있다”는신진작가 루스 프록터(Ruth Proctor)의 작품이다. 중정의 안쪽을 감싸는 회랑 캐노피는 유리 패널을 디지털 스크린 인쇄로 처리하여 하루 중 같은 시간에 지구 곳곳에 있는 사람들이 찍은 하늘의 67개 이미지로 구성된다. 이 작품은 모든 시간대에 걸쳐 있으며 국제적인 접근을 강조한 것이다. 케임브리지대학 초등학교는 지속가능한 건축의 모범적인 기준을 준수하고 있으며 세계 최초의 친환경건축물 인증제도인 영국의 브리엄(BREEAM) Excellent 등급을 받았다. 건물의 풋 프린트의 25%는 광전지 패널을 사용하고 있는 점도 눈여겨 볼 점이다. 노스 웨스트 캠브리지 개발은 케임브리지 대학교가 800년 역사에서 수행한 가장 큰 단일 자본의 프로젝트이다. 마스터플랜은 3천개의 주택, 3천명의 대학원생 공간, 1십만 평방미터의 연구공간과 초등학교, 보육원, 의사를 포함한 지역 센터 및 지역 사회 시설로 구성된다.
막스 바필드 아키텍츠는 영국에서 가장 다양하고 혁신적인 건축을 구현하는 대표적인 설계사무소이다. 데이비드 막스(David Marks)와 줄리아 바필드(Julia Barfield)가 1989년 설립하였으며 학교와 오피스, 교량 등의 광범위한 프로젝트를 수행하고 있다. 막스 바필드가 최근 디자인한 ‘스카이하우스(Skyhouse)’는 3개동으로 구성된 건물의 상승기류를 활용한 도시형 풍력 발전의 기술을 접목한 새로운 개념의 초고층 아파트로 눈길을 자아낸다. 지난해 8월 브라이튼 해변에 선보인 ‘브리티시 에어웨이 i360’ 역시 런던 아이를 디자인한 막스 바필드 아키텍츠의 작업으로 런던 아이, 런던 탑, 빅 벤 등과 같이 영국을 대표하는 상징물이 되고 있다. 세계 최초의 수직 케이블카로 칭해지는 브리티시 에어웨이 i360은 138m까지 올라가는 투명 캡슐 안에서 영국 해협과 브라이튼 해변의 풍경을 감상할 수 있다.

Marks Barfield Architects has completed an innovative new primary school on behalf of the University of Cambridge. Informed by the University’s brief and in collaboration with the North West Cambridge Development professional team, the school draws upon the latest research undertaken at the University’s Faculty of Education and the design is the result of collaboration between Marks Barfield Architects and leading educationalists and Head Teachers.
University of Cambridge Primary School is the first building to complete as part of the University’s 150 hectare North West Cambridge Development. The school consists of a three form entry primary school and 78 place nursery that will serve the site and the adjacent communities. The primary school has University Training School(UTS) status and is the first primary UTS in the UK. It has three main functions: education of primary-aged children, teacher training, and educational research linked to the University’s Faculty of Education.
Julia Barfield, Director of Marks Barfield Architects, said: “University of Cambridge Primary School is the result of team effort. It was central to our approach to come to the project without a preconceived vision, indeed Marks Barfield Architects was selected because of our open minded, research informed and collaborative approach.
Each decision was made incrementally, based on a process that assessed the site context and the educational needs of the school, while drawing on the guidance and research of leading academics from the UoC Faculty of Education. The result is a school where the education ethos and the architecture are totally aligned, such that learning can take place everywhere.”
James Biddulph, Head Teacher of University of Cambridge Primary School, said: “It is not often a head teacher gets the chance to design their own school. It’s even less common to work with architects who respond to the educational needs of children, through discussion with practising teachers and school leaders and academics who research in this area: essentially bringing professionals together to collaborate for the best outcomes for children. It was a deeply intellectual process: one that meets the demands of the University.”
The challenge and opportunity for University of Cambridge Primary School(UCPS) is to demonstrate through practice what can be achieved when research-informed design seeks to create an excellent educational experience for every child. This is a practical building, simply built, with robust materials, high levels of natural light and natural ventilation and low energy use. Future flexibility and adaptability has been built in. The desire to create non-hierarchical clusters, combined with the community ethos of the school, led directly to the circular plan formed of three blocks, a hall and an early years unit grouped around the circular unifying courtyard.
The aspiration for UCPS was that learning should take place everywhere. It was important that the design of the building communicated a strong recognition of the benefits that would accrue from trusting young learners, creating democratic learning communities within a non-hierarchical school. Educational research indicates that children need to feel safe and secure in their schools. They also need to experience a sense of freedom and ease of movement. A careful balance needs to be struck between encouraging respect for individuality as well as community.
At UCPS, children of different ages learn in close proximity to each other, offering the potential for all children to support each other as a learning community. As a University Training School, the school anticipates adult visitors, whose presence should not detract from the learning experience. All this suggested a design in which classrooms remain open and where shared learning spaces would attract pupils naturally.
The final design uses the model of 'schools within a school', each containing everything needed to support the well-being and education of mixed-age communities of six to eleven year-olds and their teachers. Alongside these clusters of classrooms and shared ‘learning street’, specialist rooms provide spaces available for the entire community. The idea was to create a school where the education ethos and the architecture are totally aligned, such that learning can take place everywhere. A school that is democratic and, despite being a large 3FE, can be divided into smaller communities while still being part of a united whole. This led to the circular plan, formed by the three clusters of six classes, plus an early years cluster, creating the unifying central courtyard where the whole school can gather.
Every classroom is articulated in plan, has no doors and opens on one side to a shared learning street and on the other to a covered outdoor learning space. The courtyard was inspired by Cambridge's historic quads, but differs from them in that it opens to the playground and the landscape beyond. The glazed cloister canopy is the site of the main school artwork by emerging artist Ruth Proctor. The canopy runs around the internal perimeter of the central courtyard, and provides cover to the primary circulation route for the school. Ruth Proctor’s artwork, entitled “We are all under the same sky”, treats each pane of glass with a digital screen print, bringing together sixty seven unique images of the sky taken by people in different locations across the globe at the same time of day, yet spanning all time zones. It emphasises the international reach and perspective of the school.
The building is designed to uphold exemplary standards of sustainability and is rated BREEAM Excellent, which the University has committed to across the entire site. 25% of the building footprint includes photovoltaic panels.

About the North West Cambridge Development
The North West Cambridge Development is the largest single capital project that the University of Cambridge has undertaken in its 800-year history. Outline planning permission was granted in February 2013 for the scheme, subject to approval of site-wide legal conditions and Reserved Matters Applications, on the 150-hectare site of University farmland situated in between Huntingdon Road, Madingley Road and the M11. The masterplan includes 3,000 homes(50% ‘key worker’ housing, available for qualifying University and Colleges employees), 2,000 post-graduate student spaces, 100,000 sqm of research space, a local centre and community facilities including a primary school, nursery, doctors’ surgery, supermarket and retail units, as well as all of the site-infrastructure and landscaping for the scheme. The development has been designed as an extension to the city, with an urban rather than suburban grain and will be of the highest design quality as well as being an exemplar of sustainable living.
