네덜란드의 대표적인 건축스튜디오 폴 드 루이터 아키텍츠에 의해 설계된 그레벨링건 영감센터는 자연과 인간 사이의 세밀한 교감을 얻을 수 있는 곳이다. 연면적 1200㎡에 3층 규모로 계획된 건물은 지속가능한 디자인과 재활용 가능한 재료를 통해 생태학적으로 구현된 것이 특색 있다.

건물 디자인은 주변의 경관과 긴밀히 연결되어 설계되었다. 건물의 외관은 특이하게 갈대로 만들어졌으며, 싱그러운 자연으로 조경화된 편안한 풍경과 수공간이 절묘하게 어우러져 있다. 이러한 인스피레이션 센터는 방문객들로 하여금 그레벨링건에 깊이 감명을 받아 다시 찾아올 수 있는 장소로서의 묘한 힘을 간직하기에 충분하다.

그레벨링건 호수는 유럽에서 조수간만의 차가 없는 가장 큰 소금호수이다. 생태학적인 관점에서도 북해의 물을 단기간에 그레벨링건 호수로 가져오는 좁은 물줄기를 필요로 한다. 또한, 수질을 위해 물이 한 번 더 흐르는 것이 중요하다. 낮고 높은 조수간만의 차는 다시 한 번 자유로운 흐름을 가져야 한다. 이로 인해 이 지역에는 다양한 동식물군이 번성하게 되었다. ‘그레벨링건의 경관(Zicht op Grevelingen/ View on Grevelingen)’은 호수의 자연을 보존하는 동시에 레크리에이션 지역 개발 프로그램으로 추진되었다. 주요 목표는 그레벨링건의 매력과 역동성을 향상시킴으로써 일정한 수준의 자연환경과 경제성을 동시에 추구하고자 시도되었다. 이러한 프로그램은 호수 주변으로의 다채로운 토지 개발과 다양한 개발 프로젝트를 통해 더욱 발전하게 된다. 프로그램의 일부분으로 지어진 인스피레이션 센터는 부로우베르스 댐(Brouwers Dam) 위에 개발되고 있다. 부로우베르스 댐은 북해와 그레벨링건 호수를 분리하며 새로운 정보센터의 자리로 제안되었다.

건물은 크게 3개의 볼륨으로 형성된다. 건물의 중심부에 가장 높은 타워동이 있고 낮은 두 개 동이 길고 짧은 균일한 형태로 들어서 있다. 타워의 하부 공간은 비워져 있는 형상으로 물리적으로 건물의 중심을 개방하여 빛과 공기, 공간의 흐름을 영감 센터로 자연스럽게 유도하고 있다. 멀리서 조망해 본다면 마치 묵직한 갈대 매스를 공중에 띄워놓은 모습으로 인식된다. 건물의 동서쪽 하부 볼륨과 반대로 대지의 남북 측에 형성된 수공간(pond)은 북해와 그레벨링건 사이의 연계성과 역동성을 상징한다. 방문객들은 북쪽에 마련된 좁고 긴 진입 램프를 통해 내부로 들어서게 된다. 건물 안쪽으로 들어서면서 마주하는 한쪽에 마련된 연못을 통해 마음의 정화됨을 느낄 수 있게 된다. 타워부 남측에 마련된 테라스에서도 연못을 조망하며 휴식을 취할 수 있다. 건물 양쪽 연못의 물 수위 차이는 방문객들로 하여금 건물 내부의 조수 간만의 차이에 대한 결과를 보여준다. 타워의 하부는 리셉션 공간이며 목재로 잘 짜인 계단을 통해 타워 상층부로 올라갈 수 있다. 타워를 오르는 동선의 중간 중간에 큼지막하게 뚫린 원형의 개방형 창을 통해 호수와 주변 풍경을 감상할 수 있게 된다. 건물의 1층 한쪽은 전시영역이고 반대편은 리셉션과 무비 공간이 마련되어 있다.

이처럼 그레벨링건 영감 센터는 호수의 자연 환경 속에 녹아 있는 건물 특유의 포근함으로 방문객들을 손짓하고 있다. 이와 동시에 방문객들은 부로우베르스 댐(Brouwers Dam)에서 교육적이면서도 유익한 환경 경험을 얻게 된다는 점에서 연중 내내 방문할 수 있는 생태 체험의 장으로 자리매김하고 있다.

Lake Grevelingen is currently the largest tide-less salt water lake in Europe. From an ecological perspective it is necessary that in the short term an inlet is established bringing the water from the North Sea to Lake Grevelingen. For the sake of the water quality, it is important that the water flows once more: low and high tides must again have(controlled) free play, which will directly result in a revival of the wealth of authentic flora and fauna in the area. ‘Zicht op Grevelingen’ (View on Grevelingen) is the development programme of De Grevelingen Nature Reserve and Recreation Area. The objective is to enhance the appeal of and the dynamic in De Grevelingen, both by approaching nature as well as the economy. This will happen by way of a number of area developments and various projects in and surrounding Lake Grevelingen.

As part of this programme, an inspiration centre is currently being developed on the Brouwers Dam. The Brouwers Dam separates the North Sea and Lake Grevelingen: the proposed location for the new information centre is at the central part of this Dam at the level of the Kabbelaarsbank. The design consists of three volumes: a tower which is seamlessly elevated above two lower building parts. The tower physically opens the building in the centre, creating a throughput of light, air and space in the heart of the inspiration centre. The water flow on both sides of the building symbolises the renewed connection and dynamics between the North Sea and Lake Grevelingen. The building will not only add something to the landscape, nature will also be directly tangible in the building. What will return to take place on a major scale in Lake Grevelingen occurs here on a minute scale: the difference in the water level on both sides of the building shows the visitor inside the building the consequences of tidal changes.

The new inspiration centre symbolises the well-considered human intervention with nature. The building will, by way of its architectural design and the conscious decision for sustainable and renewable materials, clearly position itself in the ecological landscape, whereby the tower will function as a benchmark of the area. The building design is in line with the surrounding landscape. The facades, made with reeds, and the green roofs with local vegetation ensure that the building blends in with the soft, green environment. In addition, the inspiration centre strives to communicate the remarkable transformation of the area to the visitors of De Grevelingen in a fascinating way. In the coming years, the inspiration centre should develop into a place where tourists can come the whole year round, gain an excellent impression of De Grevelingen and be invited to stay in the area, or return there. The inspiration centre will become a place where the unique experience forms the basis for an informative and educational stay at Brouwers Dam.

Paul de Ruiter is een architect, ondernemer, innovator en inspirator bekend om zijn duurzame, game changing architectuur. De Ruiter draagt bij aan de nationale en internationale discussie rondom duurzaamheid, CO2-neutraal ontwerpen en certificeringsmethoden voor gebouwen. Hij is een internationaal veelgevraagd spreker, schrijft opiniestukken voor diverse vakbladen en geeft les aan de technische universiteiten in Nederland. De Ruiter studeerde in 1990 af aan de Technische Universiteit in Delft, waar hij zijn doctorale dissertatie "The Chameleon Skin" begon in 1992. In zijn PhD onderzoek stelt hij dat gebouwen energie moeten produceren in plaats van dat ze energie consumeren. Voordat hij zijn eigen kantoor in Amsterdam startte in 1994, werkte hij voor toonaangevende architectenbureaus in Canada, Australië en Nederland. Duurzaam ontwerpen zit in het DNA van Paul de Ruiter. Zijn gebouwen zijn zo ontworpen dat de gevels intelligent kunnen reageren op de zon waardoor energie maximaal gewonnen en bewaard kan worden. Zijn architectuur krijgt op deze manier een uniek, herkenbaar en innovatief karakter mee. Hij laat zich leiden door zijn motto "Practice what you preach", waardoor hij ook de meeste van deze klimaatgevels zelf heeft ontworpen. Daarnaast gelooft De Ruiter dat architectuur niet alleen energie moet leveren in technische, maar ook in menselijke zin. Waarden zoals geluk en inspiratie maken samen met meetbare feiten als daglicht optimalisaties intelligente, duurzame gebouwen.
